Hello,
I would like to ask about information on a Hunkpapa man, probably also a chief, by the name of "Bear runs growling". I heard he was coming down from Canada with Sitting Bull, but stayed at Fort Peck in MT. Said to be even related to Sitting Bull. I couldn´t find out much in the internet, so thought to ask here. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chicheman, There was a Hunkpapa, a family head though not a chief, who was named Bear Growls Running (Mato Rlo Iyanke (sp?)), listed on the Standing Rock 1885 ration list. He was noted as 'belonging' to chief Bear Face's Hunkpapas (as was his son Rain In The Face), so there does not seem to be a family connection to Sitting Bull. See here: www.primeau.org/StandingRock1885families.htmlAnother "Bear That Runs And Growls" is in a photograph of what is believed to be men from Big Foot's band, the Miniconjou chief who died at Wounded Knee. See: digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll22/id/78969/rec/49Hope this helps in your search, Carlo

One additional note: Bear Growls Running, or a variation of this name, does not come up in Ephriam's "Sitting Bull Surrender Census". This census was taken at Standing Rock in 1881, so Bear Growls Running could have stayed at Fort Peck after returning from Canada, and between then and 1885 have moved to Standing Rock.

Hi Carlo, thanks a lot for your information, this Hunkpapa might be the man, sure possible. I appreciate you help. I found one descendant mentioned in the net, being a member of the Hunkpapa people on Fort Peck Reservation : www.epa.gov/tp/pdf/itf-bios-june12.pdf (page 11, below), Bearfighter Red Door. Seemingly there´s not too much around to find on Bear Runs Growling / Bear Growls Running. Thanks and greetings from Germany, chicheman
