From looking at the Godkin Photo with Blue Whirlwind and others, I agree that the two Native Americans are Rocky Bear and Lone Wolf. They were frequently photographed together. They may have given other names when he took their picture. They knew Godkin from his picture taken with William Cody in Omaha. It also shows Flies Above, Lone Wolf, Rocky Bear, Charlie Burgess ,William Cody, and Johnny Baker.

Is that the one of Cody and some Pawnee participants in his show?

This picture is currently offered on Ebay. The seller speculates it shows Geronimo or at least an Apache, but the stamp on the back proofs it is a Godkin photo, so it´s more likely it is a Lakota portrait: Where did I see this remarkable face?

Thanks for the Post. I wonder if this is a pine ridge policeman. The chair in this picture is not the one William used in the 1870 photos. Also the border on the print is different, so I imagine a different time period. He took most of his photos at pine ridge in the 1880's. Hope we can find out who is in this picture.

Presumably there's a list of scouts and ranks from 79--81 or thereabouts. I have read of a Sergeant Pumpkin Seed serving under Captain Sword. Sergeabt Pumpkin Seed. Whoever he is, he looks reasonably old and the oldest man during this period was Lone Wolf, who was 47 in 1879. Pumpkin Seed was 45, so I could be on to something there

Good points, Grahame. I thought about Pumpkin Seed, too. I haven´t find a definite portrait of him though.

Found this quote... needless to say I would love to see those Godkin photos:
"During July 1883 there were sun dances at both the Pine Ridge and Rosebud agencies. A number of strangers were reported as passing through Valentine [Nebraska] on their way to the Rosebud Agency to watch the sun dance. “Don’t forget that Godkin, the photographer, has returned from Rosebud agency with a complete set of views of the sun dance. Orders by mail will be given prompt attention” (VR 26 July 1883)."
