Don't feel guilty, charlie. There are so many of the same name everyone could be right! At least it's got us all talking!

Hardorff refers to him as High Bear (though also as Tall Bear!!!); the man in the Mitchell photo is not the same as either of the men in the Huffman photos.

clw, L.A. Huffman took most of his Indian photos in the early 1880ies. He arrived in Fort Keogh in 1880. By 1883 all photos I know of were listed in his advertising catalogue. So the group photo with Hump must have been taken around that time. He sometimes dated his photos earlier than he actually photographed them, perhaps to make them more attractive. The problem with him is, you can´t rely on his band or tribe designations. For example he labelled Scorched Lightning sometime as Minneconjou Sioux, another time as Assiniboine. Actually he was the son of Spotted Eagle, therefore a Sans Arc. I would like to believe he had done better with High Bear. According to Huffman at that time in 1880 there were bands of Sans Arc, Minicoujou and also Oglala Lakota at Fort Keogh. Big Road was their most important leader. Perhaps our High Bear was one of these Oglalas. Grahame, I must have read somewhere that the High Bear photographed by Mitchell was indeed the Sans Arc leader. Didn´t Ephriam say it, too? I can´t remember exactly. If he is, he was the only Sans Arc among all the Oglalas photographed by Mitchell. You know what? If you google for High Bear, you find a High Bear for every tribe. In this NY Times article a High Bear married the niece of Little Wound. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C00E4D81031E033A25752C0A9609C94659ED7CFThere also was a Brule of that name. You´ll find him in that large group photograph by J. A. Anderson at Rosebud.

Here's another photo of High Bear from the Glenbow Archives. Same man as the Mitchell photo, a few years later? Thanks, Frank and Diane!

no image? ...aaa, ok... tell me, is it ok to post pics by yourself? Because if it is... you could use this: tinypic.com/ there is very easy to use upload for pics and then you can post any pics you like by your self and totally free of charge. Like this pic here is uploaded through tinypic, I just tested it: After uploading you just copy & paste the link under the: "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" and put it between the (click: ) [/img] tags.

Then, which is the definitive sentence? High Bear (the first photo in this thread) is Minneconjou, Oglala, or......

We seem to have established that the man in the Mitchell photo is an ex-Brule who became a Sans Arc headman who was closely allied to the Minicoujou of Touch the Clouds (and was at Spotted Tail with him following the 1877 surrenders) and was an ally of Crazy Horse.
As for the others...?

Hey Frank, this thread is about High Bear... not High Cat! ;D ;D
The Glenbow image looks like a Spencer photo.
Patience Charlie, it´s summer time, I hope others will soon add some information about the first High Bear, who knows...
