Lately I came across this picture. Probably a Choate from Carlisle. I tried to identify the elders and the students. Who is the rest? Is Iron Wing correct? What do you think? Gregor

Hi Gregor my friend, I have some corrections to the identifications above: - standing 2nd from left in the back row is Chauncy Yellow Robe (not Henry SB) - standing 3rd from left in back row is High Pipe (not Iron Wing) - sitting 2nd from left in front row is Henry Standing Bear (not Luther) The rest is correct, I´m not sure about the unidentified students. Greetings Dietmar P.S.: What about the buffalo steaks?

Hi Dietmar,
thanks for the corrections (Chauncy Yellow Robe / High Pipe). But are you really sure with Henry? I remember vague that Chauncy and Luther went together to Carlisle. Wasn't Henry 1-2 years younger than Luther and went later? Maybe we get some support from our friends.

Gregor, I´m sure he isn´t Luther. After comparing to other Choate photographs I believe it´s Henry. Luther Standing Bear was among the first big group from the Lakota reservations that went to Carlisle in 1879. Chauncey, his younger brother and Henry SB arrived later. They all three were portraited by Choate in two group photographs.

Can you tell me for how long they were staying in this school? How many years?

Hey, I have looked in the SIRIS for the name of the other students and think I have found the names for this guys. I have a question: Is this Henry Standing Bear the same H.St.B. who asked Korczak for the Crazy Horse Monument?

Luther Standing Bear was enrolled by his father in the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania in 1879 at the age of eleven. Henry S.B., his half-brother - four years later. Luther left Carlisle about 1885 and Henry about 1891.
Luther was one of the few students who liked Carlisle and who stayed longer as the normal students. As a young adult he saw Carlisle in a positive light. In his later books he was more critical.

Chauncey Yellow Robe was sent to Carlisle in November 1883, about 15 years old ( Age ) He learned to speak English there and was chosen to represent the North American Indians at the Congress of Nations at the opening of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He graduated with honors in 1895 .
