This photo turned up at Cowans auction site recently. It shows Two Bears, the well known Yanktonais leader. Interestingly he wears the same or similar hair decoration as in the 1872 Gardner photo of him. Too bad the other men are not identified. Or does anyone know?

Here are the other two photos known of him: Two Bears, Yanktonais by Alexander Gardner 1872 (from SIRIS)

Is it just me or is the photo not showing up in Dietmar's first post?

I can see it.
I forgot that according to Cowan´s the man sitting far right with hat is Hairy Chin. If so, it is possible that other Hunkpapas are in the photo.
Interesting that Two Bears seems to be of rather small figure. Or is he standing a little behind the others?

Two photographs that purportedly show Two Bears' son, Yellow Badger, can be seen in the Gilbert Photographs thread of the portraits section. There is another photo featuring a man named Yellow Badger, but this doesn't seem to be the same person.

Here is another of Two Bears´ sons, who took his name: Two Bears II by C.M. Bell Regarding the group photo above: I wonder if the man standing right to Two Bears is Big Head, Upper Yanktonais.

Hau,
OK guys, you have me very interested in knowing! The man standing next to Two Bear's in the photo is it Big Head? If yes, which Big Head? Felix Big Head? George Big Head?

From the British Museum site: Two Bears, Yanktonai It is said at the site that this is a Gardner portrait, although he wears the same outfit as in the Morrow group photo above.

Wild card, but I wonder if this Two Bears portrait could be one of the Hamilton photographs from the 1865 Ft Sully councils - see the Charles L. Hamilton, Photographist thread that I started yesterday. Two Bears is clearly some years younger than the 1872 Gardner portraits. There was a big Missouri River Sioux delegation to Washington in early 1867, that could be another context for such a portrait, but Zeno Schindler did a big set of portraits of that delegation. This doesn't look one of those - the rough and ready background is very different.
Ideas?

I´m not sure. As I said, it seems he wears the same stuff as in the Morrow photo. Was Morrow active at the same time (1865) around Fort Pierre/Fort Randall? Or is the group photo not a Morrow at all and he just copied it from Hamilton? Sorry, many questions but no answer...

Morrow didn't arrive in Yankton until 1868.
