In the Mari Sandoz papers at the Love Library, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Box 31, Folder 16 (though note the papers may have been resorted in recent years) I found Mari's interview with He Dog, June 30, 1931, interepreted by John Colhoff.
Sandoz asked He Dog (the nephew - sister's son -of Red Cloud) for details on "Red Clouds relatives, particularly brothers and brothers-in-law and children, etc."
"He Dog gave them as follows:
1. Only Man, brother
2. Red Cloud, brother, killed by Pawnees (later RC of historic fame took his name)
3. White Hawk, 1/2 brother, from diff. mother, a Brule woman, but lived with the family
4. Painted Horse, from a sister of Red Cloud's mother, (probly called brother for this reason. He Dog would give no further explanation. May have been fathered by Red Cloud's father)
5. Chasing Crow [nb Alex Adams, son of trader David Adams], from sister of Red Cloud's mother
6. He Dog,
7. Only Man (Rep [means Nephew? - KMB] of above ms [Mari Sandoz]
8. Red Cloud, last son of family.
Sons of Red Cloud's sister: 1. Cloud Shield. 2. Dirt Kettle; 3. Running Eagle; 4. Eagle Hawk; 5. Four Crows; 6. High White Man.
He Dog says his father was Black Rock, his mother Blue Day, calls Only Man and High White Man his brothers.
Cloud Shield's father was Red Dog.
The first Red Cloud and Red Dog were both killed by Pawnees."
This information is vital, from a Lakota who was intimately related to all these people, not to mention a custodian of tribal lore. However, it isn't complete, and some of the statements are vague, contradict others and so on. I get the impression that He Dog was not feeling as expansively co-operative as he had been in the 1930 Eleanor Hinman interviews. But here is a primary source that deserves study.
