kakarns, I have a question that I thought you could answer. I am enrolled as I am sure you are. I am enrolled with the Cheyenne river Tribe. My question is why am I not enrolled with the Pine Ridge Tribe since they are Oglala?

Cousin, Unfortunately, I still do not know what part of the Lakota family Charging Eagle and his parents originated from. We may never know. However, I keep searching for the same answer that, you seek. More common than not, by tradition, a man would live with his wives family. For reason's unknown to me, Top Of The Head (aka) Pecokanwin received her Allotment with the CRST while, Charging Eagle received his with Pine Ridge. Since, Pecokanwin was enrolled with the CRST, most of her family (our family) enrolled there also.

Re: Kicking Bear and Short Bull « Reply #18 on Apr 3, 2011, 3:03pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A website visitor has send me this information on Kicking Bear and his cousin Elbert Chief: Kicking Bear is one of 3 brothers by his father Black Fox and mother Iron Cedar Woman. Kicking Bear, Flying Hawk and Black Fox II. Kicking Bear had one daughter and 3 sons. The one son that lived on into the 1900's is Thunderbird or Frank Kicking Bear. My friend Dave Yakima Chief, Oglala Lakota, now deceased, told me in 1998 that his father, Elbert Chief was first cousins with Frank Kicking Bear. Elbert's father was Thunderbird and his mother was Goes Out With It or Rising Sun. They all (Kicking Bear, Chief and Black Elk too) lived in Manderson, The Wounded Knee District. The Thunderbird name is familial lineage I see. Dave Chief's Lakota Oglala name was Wakinyan also or Thunder. maybe Thunderbird. Dave Chief's mother was Hattie Fills the Pipe whose father was Silas Fills the Pipe and his father was Red Dog. I want to confirm the first cousin relatinship between Elbert Chief and Frank Kicking Bear. Thank you, Tanya Thank you Tanya for sharing this! Read more: amertribes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=miniconjou1&action=display&thread=263&page=2#ixzz2OGJJHIsDA few months ago, I did a search on American Tribes for Dave Yakima Chief. I was totally amazed that the post above popped up. Since then, I have been making progress on more of the Charging Eagle lineage. A special thank you goes out to Dietmar and LaDeane !! Of course, there are still many unanswered questions. Once again, I'm reaching out for help. 1.) Does anyone have any information on the man named; "Shoots For Them" ? 2.) I am trying to figure out, who the biological parents were of; "Elbert Chief" ? Here are some of my notes. (All of the children are not listed, to simplify the post at this time): A.) I'm still researching the following and have hit a "brick wall".:
Old Chicken b. 1873 (per Mike Stevens website, is listed as a daughter of Iron Track).
These are some questions that I've been askin' myself:
1.) So was Iron Track, (aka), Little Old Woman because, per Mike Stevens, Whistler and Little Old Woman had a daughter, Old Chicken born: 1873
2.) Was Iron Track married to Whistler at one time ?
3.) Did Iron Track possibly, adopt Old Chicken as her daughter.
4.) Which, Whistler are we talking about ? Was this the Brule Whistler ?
There must have been atleast two other men named Whistler (in this time frame) besides the one listed as, the Father of Rising Sun. One killed by Wild Bill Hickok on the buffalo hunt, one killed in the Pawnee battle. (both of these Whistler's supposedly died in 1872.)
5.) Were Rising Sun and Old Chicken sister's ?

Some recent discovery's about Dave Chief (aka), Dave Yakima Chief.:
1.) Dave was a Native American actor and was in atleast two movies.
2.) Dave signed a letter dated July 14, 1991 which, consisted as part of, the elder and warrior member's of the "Bear Butte Council". [NOTE]: This letter may also include signatures of, some of my other relative's. (Still researching)
Would anyone have any info on; Merle Whistler or, Pete Fills The Pipe Sr. ?
Good progress today.

I am trying to figure out, who the biological parents were of; "Elbert Chief" ? After reviewing the following Census from; 1893 thru 1896 and 1898, 1900 (concerning Thunder Bird, Rising Sun and Chief) In 1893; Thunder Bird, Rising Sun and Chief were listed together with Shoots For Them and White. Chief was listed as a Gr. Son, 5 mo. old. In 1894; Rising Sun and Chief are listed with Shoots For Them and White. In 1895; Rising Sun and Chief are listed. In 1896; William Peno, Rising Sun, Chief and Agarota Peno are listed. In 1898; White, Iron Track and Chief are listed. (Chief is listed as G. Son) In 1900; Iron Track and Elbert Chief are listed. It's been a while since I have spoken. I am very happy to say that I have been making good advancements on my lineage. I have recently found out that my G.G. Grandmother was born in Rocky Ford, Co. Therefore, have been doing extensive research concerning southeastern CO.. Pecokanwin was b). March 17, 1864 / Rocky Ford, CO. and trying to figure out what Native Americans were living around Fort Bent during that time. My desire to try and locate more family has not changed.

Hello, As I stated in my previous post on Oct. 12,2013, I have been doing allot of reading/research concerning the birth place of Pecokanwin (aka), Top Of The Head (aka), Mary Fannie Charging Eagle. She was the daughter of Charging Eagle and Transparent Stone, wife of Daniel A. Powell Sr. and my G. G. Grandmother.
Since 9-23-13 I have been collecting information about the Native Americans that may have lived near Rocky Ford, Colorado in the year of Pecokawin's birth, March 17, 1864. I have no solid proof at this time but, most of the information I have been finding suggests it was more probable it was the Cheyenne and Arapaho Peoples. Therefore, I have had to look at a bigger picture so to speak, knowing that Charging Eagle ended up settling at Medicine Root Creek in South Dakota. The biggest question in the back of my mind is perhaps, was Charging Eagle in Rocky Ford because he married into the Cheyenne or Arapaho family or, was he originally from the Cheyenne or, Arapaho Peoples ?
1.) On the "THIRTEENTH CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES: INDIAN POPULATION, Medicine Root District, May of 1910" list the following information: Charging Eagle - Head - age 76 - Place of Birth of this Person, North Dakota - Place of Birth of Father of this Person, Colorado - Place of Birth of Mother of this Person, North Dakota. Listed with Charging Eagle were the following: Broken Rock - Wife - age 78 Yellow Bull, Albert - grandson - age 19 " ", Chester - grandson - age 18
This information was a good start for me in my research. I must say that the year this Census was taken, Charging Eagle would enter the Spirit World, 7 months later. So, considering Charging Eagle gave the birth place of himself and his Mother in North Dakota and his Father from Colorado, it seemed like a good start even though, I know the Census are not allows accurate.
2.) "PRAIRIE PROGRESS IN WEST CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA" (pg. 495) states the following: "Dan married Fannie Charging Eagle, an Agallala Sioux. Her family had lived at Pine Ridge for ten years before her marriage to Dan in 1878 and prior to that in Colorado." [Note]: Notice the spelling of Agallala. I am not sure if, this is a "type O" or, it has meaning that I am unaware of ?
3.) Cheyenne research, Source - "Access Genealogy" website/part of a larger collection called "Indian Tribes of North American", states some of the following: a.) " A little later they seem to have moved to the neighborhood of Lake Traverse and still later part of them occupied a stockade town on the Sheyenne River of North Dakota near the present Lisbon, N. Dak." b.)"When Bent's Fort was built on the upper Arkansas in 1832 a large part decided to establish themselves near it but the rest continued to rove about the headwaters of the North Platte and the Yellowstone. This separation in the tribe was made permanent by the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1851, the two sections being known respectively as Southern Cheyenne and Northern Cheyenne. In the meantime they had met and formed an alliance with the Arapaho, though there is no memory of the date or the circumstances."
Of course, knowing that 1864 was the birth year of Pecokanwin and the same year of the "Sand Creek Massacre", I have to ask myself was Charging Eagle and family survivors of the massacre or, were they not there ?
Thanks, kakarns

Re the Kicking Bear connection, see Ephriam Dickson's SITTING BULL SURRENDER CENSUS, p. 91. As you know this is the Sept. 1881 census taken at Standing Rock Agency including the people recently surrendered from Canada. Kicking Bear's family is listed among the Sans Arcs. It is Family no. 305 in the total census. Families 303 and 304 are connected to the people kakarns found.
Family 303 One Who is Caused to Shoot age 59 White Buffalo Cow wife age 53 Thunder Bird son age 21
Family 304 Good Jumper son age 11 Iron Track mother age 54
Family 305 Kicking Bear age 38 Red Headed Woodpecker wife age 23 To Fight With son age 1
Hope this helps

Thank you Kingsley !
I would like to say something at this time about some of post in this "Charging Eagle" thread.
1.) Some of the information from the Mike Stevens site may not be totally accurate.
For example; a.)The family members (including myself) who have been working together on this research, initially thought Charging Eagle's wife Close Together and Transparent Stone were one in the same person. We don't feel that way so much anymore. It is doubtful.
b.)On the M.S. site it is listed that Charging Eagle's wife, "Close Together" was the Mother of, both "Julia Good Voice Bear" and my G.G. Grandmother "Top of the Head" (aka), "Pecokanwin".
c.) In what I will refer to as "The Black Lodge Estate", there is no mention of the name "Close Together". Only the name "Transparent Stone" and my G.G. Grandmother, (who in these papers is referred to as); "Fannie M. Powell". There is also no mention of Charging Eagle's daughter, "Julia Good Voice Bear" in this Estate Record. This is what leads us to believe that Close Together and Transparent Stone were NOT one in the same person. However, Close Together may have been the mother of Julia Good Voice Bear.
