I am also looking for information on John Whitehawk. The only information that I have is that he was married to Madeline Granbois. they had a daughter, Marianna, who married my husband's great grandfather, Oscar Shyface. If you find out any information, can you share or send me to the source? Thank you, Dalisay Shyface

John Whitehawk, buried in Columbus, OH is also my 2nd greatgrandfather. In my research, the only conclusion I can come up with is that there are TWO John White Hawk. I found Indian Census records of one John Whitehawk in Montana, and other records for another John here in Ohio that were recorded during years that overlapped between 1902 and 1918. So there are either two John Whitehawk or he kept two addresses, which is highly possible as well. I know my grandmother and her sister visited the reservation in Pine Ridge where he was born (according to all three of his marriage licenses) every summer for a while. I found some his U.S. Pension Applications which had him listed as "Cetan-ska, alias White-Hawk, John." Anyone with any information about a John White-Hawk, born about 1870, Pine Ridge, SD, please e-mail me at

Mariah, Dalisay, Garnes - - do you have any sources? I think he might be the father of Senator Roy Whitehawk of Canada as well as the son of Wah Pe Ka Ka Ke (WhiteHawk)

So sorry for the long delay to respond. From the tradition of oral history passed on to me by my father and an uncle, said my great, great, great, grand father was from Montana. Of interest is that around the time of the war of 1812 we had a family member from the US, who where given the name Empire Loyalists. So John Whitehawk and from Montana and John Moad of New York State, who married one of the daughters of John Whitehawk are the only two family members who could in general terms, be called American. Around that time many First Nations men from around the Illinois, Wisconsin area and westward where involved in many alliances, and took sides. Either one of these two men may have fought on behalf of the British. The American named Moad was first engaged to Elizabeth Whitehawk who was sent to England to be confirmed in the Church of England, but she apparently contracted some illness and died there. So then some arrangement was made for him to marry Sarah Jane Whitehawk who became Sarah Jane Moad who was my grandmothers mother. That is all I can remember for now. Hope this of help to someone and vice versa if someone can help me connect the dots to Montana. When I was young raised on a farm in Ontario Canada, Both my dad and grandmother encouraged me to love and be proud of this first nations heritage. My grandmother taught me to make rugs and quilts. My dad was small but a great horseman and I too love riding and rodeo. He also kept in touch with local first nations friends and the crafts these passed on. Thats all for now

Interesting. I've been trying to find out also. I heard rumors in my family. And finally did a DNA test. And low and behold. It's TRUE. Chief John whitehawk is a great great relative. I ve gathered a few pics of what I could. My bucket list is to see his items in a Dakota museum. One day. I have few pics of that also.
