Looks like you may have been right about the chiefs at Standing Rock photo, Dietmar. Thanks for posting these wonderful photos, Scott.

The men in front of the tipi - the two Indians NOT holding hats would appear to be Thunder Hawk and Belly Fat/Walking Shooter (L-R); I feel I ought to know who the Indian on the far right is, but can't place him.
The man sitting in front of the rush wigwam lodge is Grey Wolf, a Winnebago and it's a Hamilton and Hoyt photo rather than one by your great great grandfather (though I've seen another photo of Grey Wolf clearly from the same session but in a different pose, in a mount belonging to James Cremer, 18 South Street, Philadelphia).

I agree with all of Grahame´s identifications so far. This one´s great. Thunder Hawk (No. 2) is pretty safe, No. 3 is possibly Belly Fat. I was wondering about Bears Rib for No. 5, but I´m not really sure. Thank you again for sharing these wonderful photos Scott!!!

Hello Dietmar, James Lucas was my Great-Great Grandfather. The first photograph I posted is of him, with two of his three daughters, Ethel and Hattie. Hattie is my Great-Grandmother. If you look closely at the picture you will notice that he is actually taking the photo in the mirror, and is holding the camera in his hands. James was born in 1850 and died at his parents house in New York City in 1900. We think he died from mercury poisoning - an occupational hazard of photography at the time? I do have some more native american photographs and will post them when I have a chance to digitally scan them. I have also attached a couple pages of James Lucas's diary from 1896...one passage talks of Buffalo Bills Wild West Show, another talks of "StereoOpticon Story " which was the early version of motion picture shows - or silent movies.

Hi, In my opinion the man that has two straight feathers (that in the centre near the white woman) is Running Antelope : what do you think ? Attachments:

As I'm sure people have recognized, this great group photo is from Standing Rock Agency about the end of the 1870s. It was taken at the same session as another similar shot with much of the same personnel, standing in a different order. It would be good to posr it up in similar resolution if at all possible. All the individuals are identified on the other photo, so it should be easy to post up full id's for this great image as well.
I recognize Fire Heart V, third from right, John Grass, fourth from right, Walking Shooter (aka Belly Fat), second from left.
Thanks for posting this!
See thread "Group of Sioux Chiefs Standing Rock Agency" on these boards for the other photo.

A quick shout-out to LaDonna: on the new group shot from Standing Rock posted by lilo, there is a quite clear hill outlined in the background. Do you recognize the shape of the hill, and does it help us locating the two photographs exactly in the Standing Rock-Fort Yates vicinity?
