My mistake .... I got the wrong picture ... sorry !! That photo has been mislabeled by the original photo printer and that name legend was added during one of the printing processes - in other photos taken of that same group the label covers a banner that read "N.Y. World" as in the newspaper. That man sitting on the box is Major Burke - he's seen in several other photos taken on the same day. It's this photo I wanted ..... and the guy sitting on the right with the blanket on his knee and the rifle in his hands !! farm4.static.flickr.com/3009/2672364469_b65027b81c_o.jpgAnnie

I have been trying to find a photograph of Kicking Bear with his family, taken around the late 1890s or early 1900s, possibly at Pine Ridge. I remember seeing one once but can't remember where. Can anyone help?

Here's another version of 1891 Pine Ridge, courtesy of the Sheldon family: The photograph is from the 1891 Chief's Counsel that occurred at Pine Ridge following the Wounded Knee Massacre. The man seated on the far right is identified as J.G. Worth. As you can see he's wearing 'The' Waist Coat of Chief Rain In The Face! Also in this photo is my Great Grandfather George C. Crager (J.C. Craiger). At that time he was working for the New York World Newspaper and Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. One might assume from its public display on Mr. Worth, he had probably obtained the Waist Coat through legal circumstances. The waistcoat as it is now displayed in the Glasgow Museum.

I love going to the Kelvingrove in Glasgow - great place, great art and they have a small but good collection of Native American stuff - the kind of stuff you don't get to see on many UK museums outside of London. I don't know the whole history of the thing, but it would seem Rain sold it at some point. Nothing surprising about that; there was a lot of stuff made for sale during that period. Was it repatriated? Selfishly, I kind of hope not, unless a reproduction can be put in its place, which I believe is what happened with the Ghost Shirt - although I think that's an altogether different case legally and emotionally because it seems likely that it was taken from a dead or wounded body, passed or sold by someone to George Crager, then sold to Glasgow Museum Services.
