While Kicking Bear and Short Bull were at Fort Sheridan, the sculptor, Carl Rohl-Smith, used them as models for a public sculpture to commemorate 'The Fort Dearborn Massacre', completed in 1893. Kicking Bear was the model for Black Partridge, the Potawatomi leader who saved the life of Margaret Helm; Short Bull was the model for the warrior about to kill her.

Short Bull at the rear; the man to the right is Horn Eagle. Not 100% convinced by this one...

Taken at Fort Sheridan presumably January-March 1892. You can see some of the people are the imprisoned as Ghost Dancers although there are others wearing non-traditional clothing.



Despite the written annotation, Kicking Bear isn't there - that's Scatter - and nor is the man kneeling at the right of the front row Rain in the Face - even if it does say that here:

You can see Johnny Bruguier at the back at the left and, I think, John Shangreau further over to the right
