This is one of my most favorite photos. Her jacket says "western apache" , the gloves look US Government Indian Scout, yet her looks say Mimbreno-Chiricahua etc.. What was she?? Who was she?? What was her life like?? And what ever became of her?? Does anyone know anything about her?? Attachments:

Thanks for sharing this unique photograph with us, Mithlo! Very interesting. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about her - or him, as I think it could also be a young man. I will do some research and see if I can find something...

Great photograph! I have never seen it before, and, like Kayitah, I don't have any information about her (or perhaps him).

It was said she was a colorful character around Wilcox Arizona in the 1880's. This photo was said to have been made about 1884 at Wilcox and that she was half Apache and half Irish. Attachments:

Hello I'm new here. Love that photo and have never seen it before! Very interesting! Whoever she is she looks like quite a young woman! I know she is not Lozen the Apache female warrior. The only photo I have seen of Lozen was after she and Geronimo were captured and on their way to Florida sitting outside a train car at rest. Lozen didn't care how she looks and all she cared about was helping her Tribe. This girl in the photo seemed to care about her appearance. She obviously was a tomboy though!

That photo is from the A. Frank Randall collection. That photo is real. It's not some staged photo. That photo was taken in the 1880's under Apaches.

It's certainly not Calamity Jane-a brief profile Martha Jane Canary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman, and professional scout best known for her claim of being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok, but also for having gained fame fighting Native AmericansCalamity Jane was born May 1, 1852, as Martha Jane Cannary (or Canary) [2] in Princeton, Missouri, within Mercer County. Her parents, Robert W. and Charlotte Cannary. In Piedmont, Martha Jane took whatever jobs she could to provide for her large family. She worked as a dishwasher, a cook, a waitress, a dance-hall girl, a nurse, and an ox team driver. In 1868 Jane joined a construction gang building the Union Pacific near Piedmont in what was at that time known as Wyoming Territory. Two years later she was recruited by General George A. Custer as an army scout at Fort Russell. Went to Arizona fighting Apache's LaDeane

The same happend with me, same error showed up,dt. So maybe somebody can help with that.
Concerning the photo of the young woman, that reminds me on a similar one I saw of a Delaware woman, done around 1900. Seemingly those kinds of photos were popular at that time. The Delaware woman was not a scout though. So not sure if the young Nde woman was a scout ? Or do you have specific information on that Mithlo ? Would be interesting if she was a scout indeed, of course.

"Now folks....Our Women are TOUGH!!!!"
how true that is. whenever I read old stories about what Apache women did to survive ... I think about how my wife would react today if I suggested that same thing. Hahahahahaha! I would be a dead man :-)
I just read a short comment in Jason Betzinez' book (I Fought With Geronimo) where he is talking about one battle just south of the border. The Apache warriors were dug in and fighting Mexican troops. The Apaches were running out of ammo, but needed to stay in position to fight. So an Apache woman actually crossed the ground on foot - under fire - and carried back 500 rounds of ammunition in a bag. That was brave, and it saved the battle for the Nde. She was a brave woman alright, and things like that happened often.
we are spoiled today ... compared to the people in the old days. their lives were very tough, and mentally they were very resilient.
