On a different thread, Clark asked about the Sihasapa headman Hawk Shield, mentioned in a brief text by Robert P. Higheagle. Here is all I have so far:
HAWK SHIELD Cetan Wahacanka (c1838-1900). Sihasapa. Also known as Two Packs. Lived at the Cheyenne River Agency during the 1876-81 period; transferred with several families to the Standing Rock Reservation in late 1881 or early 1882. Initially listed as a member of John Grass' band, he split off and formed his own band by fall of 1884; shown as a headman in Standing Rock at least through 1890. Children included Cloud Bear/Herbert Welsh and Mary Pleets. No known portrait.

Herbert Welsh or Hawkshield (c. 1865-1944) was the son of Two-Pack (Hawk Shield) and Maggie Red Horse Woman. He attended Hampton Institute from Nov. 1888-October, 1891. In the Hampton records he is listed as “Mahpiya Mato, Cloud Bear….A most earnest and industrious student, he let no opportunity for self improvement pass him by….he at once found work as a catechist at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Mission on Oak Creek, and, when the Rev. Philip Deloria was called away, took up his work and has carried it on most successfully” (Twenty-Two Year’s Work of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, 474-75). He was married to Mary One Bull (Brown Shawl Woman) and the couple had three children. Later in life, according to the 1930 census, he was married to a mixed blood woman named Annie and had three additional step-children. A note in the Phoenix Indian School’s newspaper, The Native American, states “Rev. Herbert Hawkshield Welsh was married Dec. 2, to Miss Elsie Dorian, of Oak Creek, South Dakota” (vol. 17, no. 1, January 8, 1916). © Emily Levine
