so in the famous skeleton canyon photo with Miles and Geronimo, who is the guy to the left of Miles. Looks like a ten year old kid! Now turn your Apache bloodhound instincts on and find out who he is! He's not Apache, but has the left seat of Miles. Mile's son or grandson? Or a real small soldier? Or a Ghost in the photo? Any help would be appreciated!

I am not aware of photos of the meeting between Geronimo and Miles at Skeleton Canyon, but I think you have the talks of Crook and the Apache leaders at Embudos in mind. It does show a kid, his name is Charlie Roberts, son of one of Crook's officers. He lived at least until 1860 and left an account. My friend Henri sent me this article from Whispering Wind:

I agree with Jeroen. There's scan from Jay Van Orden's book Geronimo's surrender: The 1886 C.S. Fly photographs.

There is a Chiricahua video that contains an interview with Charley Roberts. In that interview Mr. Roberts sounded very old, he referred to Jeronimo as it would be pronounced in Spanish. He also said that Jeronimo was speaking Spanish during the Skeleton Canyon meeting with Crook.

Charley Roberts was apparently, given his young age, the last eyewitness to the surrender of Geronimo to Crook. Thank you guys for the information, which is why I joined this site!

It is difficult to look at that photo. For Geronimo knew it was over.

It is difficult to look at that photo. For Geronimo knew it was over. You are absolutely correct, Geronimo was quite agitated with the proceedings, Crook was playing hardball with him. Bourke stated that Geronimo was sweating profusely (hangover from champagne and whiskey supplied by Tribolett??) Geronimo then blackened his face with charcoal for the remainder of the proceedings...

I agree with Jeroen. There's scan from Jay Van Orden's book Geronimo's surrender: The 1886 C.S. Fly photographs. Most of the identifications are right, but he was wrong on some Chiricahuas. But since I guess we all know that I don't feel it's necessary to go into detail.

On a side note, it sure seems as if the military was more political during these days, you had to know someone to get an appointment to West Point. Many children of the officers were West Pointers themselves; i.e. Charlie Roberts, Gatewood's son too... You've just got to know somebody...
