Hello all you photograph experts. I am gathering images to include in the published edition of Josephine Waggoner's manuscript. She herself collected a very large number of photographs to include with the book but many of them are unidentified. A lot of them I know; I have attached some that I can't identify here. Apologies for the quality---at this point I only have photocopies of her originals. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! emily Also: there is another thread on the Portrait ID list asking for information on Frisking Elk. I have info on him and will be posting it. This is likely someone Waggoner knew on Standing Rock: I believe she ID'd this man as Swift Bird??? She ID's this man as Lame Deer...a son? Is this the Oglala or the Brulé? John Grass, right? I believe it's the same image as a color tinted one posted on this site.

Hi Emily, great photos. I´m surprised to see this one: I haven´t seen it before, but it looks like from the series of photographs taken of the Sioux delegation visiting Washington in 1870. I believe he´s Little Swan aka Paul Swan rather than Swift Bird. There´s another shot of him on this occasion wearing a war bonnet. The photo of Lame Deer´s son is actually Minimic, a Southern Cheyenne. He Dog, its the Brule, not the Oglala. John Grass is correct. I think I´ve seen at least a couple of your other images before, but need to check that... Best wishes Dietmar

Thanks Dietmar! Waggoner was well acquainted with Fiske. When he was a child his family rented out one floor of the house that her husband built at Fort Yates in the early 90s. I think his father and her husband were army buddies. She did not think much of him as a historian, but has a lot of his photographs.

I agree....looks like Paul Swan aka White Swan III, Mniconjou - the photo with Joseph Four Bears abt 1870 comes to mind. Attachments:
