I have been to Fort Bowie and Apache Pass, Camp Verde and the White Mountain Apache Reservation (Whiteriver, Cibecue, Canyon Day). I didn't have enough time to do and see all I wanted, but I will definetely return! I also loved Sedona and Pinetop very much! I also saw Holbrook, where the Chiricahuas were loaded into railroad wagons to make their trip to imprisonment in Florida. Would be great to meet other forum members there! When were you there Kayitah? If it has been significant time since you have been on Ft. Apache Res, a big fire burned from the Cibicu rodeo grounds all the way up and beyond ShowLow Heber/Overgaard. Most of the Ponderosa forest gone, burnt up...

I was in the southern part of San Carlos (Peridot and San Carlos) this past August. The people there were just as nice, but it is obvious why no N'de wanted to settle on this reservation. Hot and dry, barely and water in summer, lots of insects, and I didn't even see a tiny patch of forest. Even though I knew about the fire at Fort Apache, I wanted to go there too, but didn't have the time to do it. It would have certainly been a sad picture to see everything burnt down - not only the beautiful scenery, but even more the homes of your people. Do you get any government support to build the homes up, or is there a fund for it?

I visited Apacheria again a few weeks ago as part of my research for my new book... went to both San Carlos and White Mountain, but also some of the significant historical sites, including Chiricahua N.M., Cochise Stronghold, Fort Bowie, Geronimo surrender site etc... There is also a wonderful exhibition at the Heard museum in Phoenix called "Beyond Geronimo..." For more info: www.heard.org/currentexhibits/geronimo.html
