Hi Hin Tamaheca and everyone,
I came across a beautiful photograph of a Hunkpapa named Good Hawk, 1872, and was wondering if anyone here knows anything about him. I am unable to post the photo here but am hoping Hin Tamaheca can do so for me, as I think he posted the photo, but can't remember just where I found it. I found the name in the book To Kill An Eagle by the Kadleceks and in it Charles Fire Thunder mentions his grandfathers name as Good Hawk. Looking for ancestors........
Thanks eljay

eljay, here´s Good Hawk´s portrait by Alexander Gardner in 1872: Portrait of Dakota man, Good Hawk (Cetan waste) 1872 (linked from SIRIS) Home: Standing Rock Agency, North Dakota Note by Smithsonian Institution: "Taken by Alex. Gardiner in Washington D.C. For The Trustees of the Blackmore Museum, Salisbury England."--from Blackmore colln. Album No. 5. Blackmore nos.: A5-77 & -77A. Jackson Cat nos.: 172-173. Variations of name: W. H. Jackson gives "Hav-ka- Wash-ti" or "Good Hawk;" Mooney gives "Ha-ka' wa-shte" or "Good Fifth Son;" Williamson gives "Heca Waste" or "Good Buzzard." Listed on Blackmore collection album as Chawana Reservation. Gardner album gives Ha-v-ka-washta. See Jackson Catalog 172. I think we had at least one other photo of Good Hawk, but I can´t find it. Grahame perhaps?

Is he the third man from the left? This was identified on Cowans as a photo of Dakota Indians, but I wonder if it's not connected to the 1872 delegation

Dietmar and Grahamew, and LaDonna,
Thanks for posting these wonderful photos of Good Hawk. The third picture is very interesting but I myself cannot say that looks like Good Hawk. I did find a Good Hawk on Ancestry, 1900 Census-Standing Rock Reservation. I was wondering if LaDonna has access to any further info on Good Hawk and his spouse/children. I know that his father was born in North Dakota and his mother in Manitoba, according to 1900 census.
Thanks again. eljay

Hello.
I see on the delegation thread on this site that Good Hawk was a member of the Milk River Delegation from Montana.
Also, I see his name on the talks of the 1888 agreement at fort peck. if i am not mistaken he gets up and speaks on behalf of the young men of the camp.

Is that Hairy Chin next to the man I've identified (possibly) as Good Hawk?

Hi LaDonna, Thanks so much for all the info on Good Hawks and Fire Thunders. I knew I would get help here! I love this website. Your effort is greatly appreciated. The Yanktonais Cetan Waste looks like a good place to start.
thanks to everyone, eljay

Ive stumbled upon your conversation and I was wondering if you could find where my family gets the Last Name Wounded Knee from, I found a article in a Cowboys&Indians Magazine, that said there was a man Wounded Knee who would camp at this white womans farm and trade things...
