It is said that Lozen died from tuberculosis... This picture is titled "Mescalero girls" but an additional caption states these girls are children from Geronimo's people, so they may well be actually Chiricahuas... The 2nd from right is wearing a Chiricahua dress. The one on far left might be wearing one also. The rest of the girls are wearing a Mescalero dress. Give me a couple of days and I will have some names for you. I may know two of them but let me do some double checking. During the puberty ceremony now, adzaneglesh will wear a dress from her family and depending on who she may represent more, she may wear a Mescalero dress or Chiricahua dress. Nonetheless, all the dresses are very pretty.

Picture was around 1951/52. Merideth Magoosh, Bernadeen Mendez, Lucinda Carrillo, Martha Sago and Priscilla Treas. Left one was indeed Chiricahua. Her granddad was famed warrior, Yanosha. Martha's Granddad was Sago, another Chiricahua. The others roots are in Mescalero.

Also girl usually has at least one or two attendants helping her through ceremony to provide support. Agreed the dresses are visually beautiful, should hear how sound when girl dances as well with tin jingles - the best.

Tonse (Crawler), daughter of Geronimo and Chee-hash-Kish (wife of "Mike" Da-Ke-ya). I....Don't....Think....So!!!! For many years ALL have believed this young woman to be her, including experts and authors/writers (even Angie Debo). This young woman, like a few others whom took studio photos, doesn't even show up in the 2 known groups photos of captive Chiricahua woman and children in 1886. I don't know who she is....yet I do know she IS NOT....DOHN-SAY!!!! Note: The quote of the photographer Baker and Johnson states only Tonse (Crawler) a relative of Naiche. Attachments:

Finally!!! I agree with you Mithlo! I think it was assumed that Tonse and Dohnsay were one and the same only because of the name similarity! But she does not look like Geronimo at all, she does look a bit like Naiche and Dorothy though... so I think that part of the identification is correct. Any thoughts on in what way she was related to Naiche?
