The name Bonito ( or sometimes Benito) shows up once in a while in Apache history, but he remains a rather shadowy figure. So far, I have found very little info about him, not even sure if he was in fact a Bedonkohe or a White Mountain Apache married into the Chiricahua people. I am looking forward to all info posted here... and an image said to show Bonito, although I am not 100% sure: Can anybody confirm or correct this?

Bonito was either a White Mountain Apache who had intermarried into the Chiricahua tribe, or vice-versa. I have to look this up and let you know.
You are correct, the man at center in the lower image is Bonito. The other Apache is a White Mountain man named Jim, or Slim Jim. He became a sergeant in his company.

I read a statement that Bonito was instrumental in the 1881 outbreak, but I can't find what his actual role was in any of my sources. Also, he was in the famous "Chatto raid" of 1883, then came to the reservation with the largest group (which included Loco and Nana) and refused to come along in the flight of may 1885. After that, he is hardly mentioned anymore... Bonito's son:

I am also trying to find information about Bonito. I was told his last name was Alchise however I am not sure if that is connected to Chief Alchise.
He also had a son, Chasi-ta, whose English name from what I understand was Carl Moonwalker.
Is there anyone else that has further information?

Bonito was a White Mountain chief married to a Bedonkohe. If I’m not wrong he fought with Chatto’s riders at Sátachi Falls and was the leader at Chocolate Pass (March 1883). In one of the rides they struck a charcoal camp and Beneaktinay was killed. Having his family and friend dead, his friend Peaches (cibecue Apache)also on the ride, decided to go back to the reservation (S.C.). Some chiricahuas did not like that decision but Bonito who was a very respected chief by all the warriors, told them to let him go for family was very important to the Apaches an some of his relatives were at S.C. After he left, Chatto and Bonito Split up taking different roads and targets. Peaches was then arrested by Britton Davi’s scouts. The victims of the numerous riders were frontier men. There was fear among the people living there and the indignation came with the McComas case. When the judge and Juanita where shot, two apaches started a great argue about who would take the kid. Bonito took him, attached Charley to his body and rode with him in his horse. By then, Crook had already decided to surprise then in Sierra Madre.

I’m not sure but I think there was not any familiar link between Bonito and Alchise. They participated in some actions together though, for example when Nock-ay- det - klinne was to be arrested near Ft. Apache. Some Cibecue and White Mountain Apaches trying to avoid it, ambushed some soldiers. Among the Attakers were Bonito and U- Clen- ay ( Alchesay) together. I think his son L. Bonito was related to Kaahtheney (Jacob) by marriage (but I’ve not heard about family links with Alchesay).

I am a decendent of Chief Bonito. He married Maria Baker/Barker called Hermosa. They had a daughter named Little Dove (Nanci Dove) my great-great grandmother. He was Chirichua, family passdown was that he was cuzzin to Geronimo, on Geronimos mothers side. He rode with Chatto, then with Geronimo. He did not surrender with Geronimo, he was with a small band in Mexico at that time, then to Texas, he and 15 others joined up with The Kiowa -Apache and was captured and taken to San Carlos, where he settled. Nanci Dove married a white man name Shadrick and he adopted her 6 kids, as her first husband was killed buy the Mexicans. Shadrick took her back to kentucky where he was from. He was a confederate soldier and this was after the war. They married in Mccleanan county Texas before moving to Kentucky.

Bonito married Hermosa, a white mountain apache, who lived on San Carlos. This is all past down, hand written by elder family members. My great-great uncle said he remembers Shadrick arriving by wagon in Kentucky with an Apache women he called Nancy Little Dove and her 6 children. Bonito stayed on San Carlos, he is buried there, from what I am told.

Question: Was your relative Anderson Shadrick (1859 - 1926) who married abt. 1878 Nancy J Shadrick ("born Dove")? Nancy was about 1878 ca. 18 years old. Together they had 8 Children. Read more: amertribes.proboards.com/post/new/1102#ixzz6CSMY6gmqNo, They only had one child together William. The other 6 was from her first marrige. I beleive she was 24-25 at the time of their marrige. William was born in Dallas Texas, so that would have made the total 7. The one you mention is the Nancy Joan Shadrick/Shadwick (Dove) who was Cherokee and Irish from Tracy City, TN. They were also Married in TN. My relatives were married in McClennan County Texas, Anderson died in 1932 and is buried in Ky. It was confusing for many years trying to figure out which one was the right Nancy Dove. My Great uncles and other relatives helped me close links to explore which led me to Hermosa (Maria Baker) and Bonito. I was told that some of the Apache on the rez took white names during that time. From what was past down, Hermosa was called Maria by the white teacher (Ms. Baker) on the reservation. So from what is handwritten and past down, Hermosa took the white name of Maria Baker. There is no record or pass down if Chief Bonito/Benito to a white name or not during his life as a POW on San Carlos. He was no longer concidered a Chief on the rez. as there were many (leaders) Nantans who held distinction while in there on bands and tribal configurations.
