AGAIN.... I know that I've asked this before (sometime) but I gotta ask again because I have totally forgotten... so here goes: 1. Is this guy on the pic Cheyenne called Alights On The Cloud? 2. If he is... according to Grinnel he died back in 1852...could have this picture been taken before that? 3. Who took the picture? Soule? 4. Were Alights On The Cloud and Man On A Cloud brothers? 5. ...and finally, does anyone know a book where I could read more about him? Thanks and forgive me. -Frank Attachments:

Hi Frank, this should be Alights-On-A-Cloud. At the Smithsonian Institution/SIRIS this Cheyenne is interchangeable called Alights-On-A-Cloud or Man-On-A-Cloud. Here is a Daguerreotype of the notorious Lola Montez with Alights-On-A-Cloud This must have been shot between 1851 and 1853. At that time Lola toured the eastern States in the U.S. with a "Bavarian dance show" or so. Gregor

Hi Frank,
great you´re back!
Yes, Alights On A Cloud had brothers, one of them inherited his name and went under Man On A Cloud. There are several photographs of him, one with Mad Wolf as you mentioned, when he visited Carlisle Indian School around 1880. Other portraits were taken some years later.
The 1851/1852 photos above were taken during Alights delegation trip. He died the following summer.

The first photograph of Alights On A Cloud was likely taken by John H. Fitzgibbon at St. Louis in 1852.
Frank, the best source of Alights On A Cloud and his death by Pawnee warriors is probably Father P.J. Powell´s "People of the Sacred Mountain". You can find shorter but similar descriptions in books of Stan Hoig and George Hyde ("The Pawnee Indians").
Btw, Man-on-a-Cloud is said to had been his youngest brother. Other brothers include Iron Shirt and Medicine Water, who was the Cheyenne leader later imprisoned in Fort Marion, Florida.

This was taken in El Reno, OK, and captioned "Cloud Chief." We are talking about the same individual, right? Or a brother or similar relative? Attachments:

Man on a Cloud was brother to Alights on Cloud , while Man RIDING on a Cloud was the son of Alights on Cloud but who was Cloud Chief ? He has an almost identical face as Alights on Cloud all 3 are almost of the same age by the 1887 census www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~itcheyen/1887CheyenneCensus.htmlhome.epix.net/~landis/manonacloud.html(Note: Standing Bird family Oral History states: Man on Cloud #2078 was born in 1852 in the Dakotas the same year his brother, Alights on Cloud, (father of Man Riding on a Cloud #20), was killed by the (Wolf People) Pawnee Man on Cloud #2078, Iron Shirt #2080, Alights on Cloud, and their nephew, Man riding on a Cloud #20, were all Cheyenne Chiefs) these two were chief as Cloud Chief but i found only photos of two out of the three no photo of Man Riding on a Cloud is it possible (even if census list 3) that Cloud Chief is Man Riding on a Cloud ? resemblance between Alights on Cloud and Cloud Chief is huge , father and son ?
