Another extract from his tale:"...I found my war bonnet, shield and my quiver full of arrows. While I was putting on my war bonnet and shield, bullets were hitting all around me and bullets were hitting the lodges like hard storm. On way up (Sand Creek) the feathers of my war bonnet were shot away and my shield was shot several times, but I did not get hit". Indeed, he was very lucky to survive to the massacre. Any info about the chief BIG HEAD killed at Sand Creek? i don't think this BIG HEAD was one of the various chiefs of that name , i think he and the ones he named were all young warriors (if i remember well george bent words) chief BIG HEAD was alive in 1866 , together with Medicine Arrows and some dog soldiera agreed to the fort Wise treaty another BIG HEAD (the one wounded at ft Kearny) was made chief of the poor people clan in 1856 and died in 1857 (according to Grinnell) a curiosity , according to George Bent one of the 3 Custer's prisoners in 1869 was Little Bear also named BIG HEAD , he died in the Sappa Creek massacre in 1875

The fellow in the second Cheyenne camp, selected by the council as their 'chief' and identified with some irony as "White Man's Chief". Just reading Imre Nagy's article about Yellow Nose, he mentions that Lean Bear, the Ridge Men band chief, killed by Lt Eayre's Colorado troops in May 1864, was also known as 'White Man'. Could be pure coincidence, but thought it worth recording. i have problems with the age , Lean Bear was too young in 1835 , maybe his father

Updating Despite my long search, I found no hint or evidence, whether White Shield aka Gentle Horse and Gentle Horse ( brother of Chief Black Kettle ) have been the same person. Personally I think, they were two differentially persons. Sorry for my belated answer - cinemo we have almost no sources , impossible to know

I also have read that the famous chief ICE (or White Bull) was son of Black Mocassin, and then brother of White Hawk. It's right? There were two Black Moccasin chiefs Black Moccasin (a/k/a Limber Lance) principal Chief. (See Father Peter Powell: People of the Sacred Mountain.) and Black Moccasin aka iron

Man on a Cloud was brother to Alights on Cloud , while Man RIDING on a Cloud was the son of Alights on Cloud but who was Cloud Chief ? He has an almost identical face as Alights on Cloud all 3 are almost of the same age by the 1887 census www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~itcheyen/1887CheyenneCensus.htmlhome.epix.net/~landis/manonacloud.html(Note: Standing Bird family Oral History states: Man on Cloud #2078 was born in 1852 in the Dakotas the same year his brother, Alights on Cloud, (father of Man Riding on a Cloud #20), was killed by the (Wolf People) Pawnee Man on Cloud #2078, Iron Shirt #2080, Alights on Cloud, and their nephew, Man riding on a Cloud #20, were all Cheyenne Chiefs) these two were chief as Cloud Chief but i found only photos of two out of the three no photo of Man Riding on a Cloud is it possible (even if census list 3) that Cloud Chief is Man Riding on a Cloud ? resemblance between Alights on Cloud and Cloud Chief is huge , father and son ?

Father Peter J. Powell identified the Cheyenne in the below photo as followed: “Starving Bear [Lean Bear] stands at the right, holding the long-stemmed pipe of a Council Chief. Nearly fifty winters old, he had sat in the sacred circle of the Fouty-four [council chiefs] since 1854, representing his Hese-omee-taneo-o. War Bonnet sits next to him, holding his Chief´s pipe (however it is possible that War Bonnet is standing at the right, with Starving Bear seated in the center).Standing in the water, cousin of War Bonnet, sits beside his relative. He, as a warrior society headman, does not carry the long-stemmed pipe of a Council Chief. (see Peter J. Powell: People of the Sacred Mountain, Volume I, page 246) just based on facial resemblance i can suggest that War Bonnet is the one standing (same square face as his cousin Standing in the water) while Lean Bear in the middle has an almost oval face similar to his brother Bull Bear in the camp Weld photo i guessed Lean Bear was the one standing (due to his headchief pose) but resemblance points in the other direction
