I agree that Whirlwind Soldier probably was not at the Little Bighorn. If he was, he must have returned to the Spotted Tail Agency soon afterward as he mentioned a number of times at the agency during 1876-77.
He signed the Black Hills Treaty in September 1876.
Whirlwind Soldier enlisted in the Indian Scouts on April 1, 1877 and ultimately served four enlistments, finally being discharged on June 12, 1878. In August 1877, he was a sergeant in Company E Indian Scouts, composed of Minneconjou/Sans Arc from Touch the Clouds and Red Bear's bands, leavened with a number of dependable Brule such as Whirlwind Soldier.
He is also listed in the June and December 1877 census of Spotted Tail Agency.

This is a better scan of the cyanotype we had earlier posted with Whirlwind Soldier, Roaster and Standing Elk: (original at Denver Public Library) Still wondering who is sitting at far left.

New York Times article, March 13, 1884: Obviously there are several major errors in the text. Apparently Standing Elk died the same year as is indicated in the NY Times article of September 21th, 1884:

You wouldn't want actual facts to get in the way of promoting a traveling tour in the 1880-1890's. Especially if you were trying to sell a lot of books (Newell.)

Dick, do you know the German literary character "Baron Münchhausen"? Seems to me this Major Newell was one of that kind. Cicero Newell, Indian agent at Rosebud 1878/79 Thank you LaDeane, here are some portraits of various Whirlwind Soldiers: Senator McMaster & Clement Whirlwind Soldier, 1926 Whirlwind Soldier 1925 Hugh Whirlwind Soldier I can´t see Hugh in your list, LaDeane. And does anyone know which Whirlwind Soldier is in the second photo? Clement?

Dietmar-Although given names were not introduced permanently in the U S Indian census until 1898, many of the older individuals never subjected themselves to white men’s ways -The younger Individuals, enrolled in Carlisle, were forced to acquire given names for identification purposes as early as 1879. there was no person listed in the 1885-1940 U S Indian census as Hugh Whirlwind Soldier- LaDeane

I'm interested about Standing Elk in the above cyanotype. I have these info about him: born circa 1810 - died after 1875. He was the son of Swift Hawk. He married White Woman and had two sons. He was an head warrior in the Spotted Tail's band (wazhazha) and attending a Sun Dance in June 1875 on Beaver Creek (Nebraska). Are correct these info? Are there other photos about him?

Charlie,
yes it´s Standing Elk, but he´s not Wazhazha, as far as I know.
I think it´s best to start a new thread for him, because there are several portraits of him available.

Still about Standing Elk: He belonged to WAGMEZAYUHA (Corn Keepers) band, not Wazhazha. Indian's name: HEHEKA NAJIN. In 1868 he signed the Fort Laramie Treaty. In September 1868 his band settled on the south side of the new "Whetstone Creek" reserve in South Dakota. Other info are appreciated. Thanks.

Good morning everybody. Talking about the cyanotype posted by Dietmar on Mar 30, 2012 at 2:53pm I was thinking if the man sitting at far left could be Young Spotted Tail in short hair. Looking at the nose shape and the prominence of cheek bones I found some resemblance with the pics posted in Spotted Tail's family thread. Hope this helps. Greetings from Italy.
