Sitting Bull – The PhotographsHi friends, my friend Gregor Lutz has compiled a portfolio of virtually all Sitting Bull photographs that are available. He took as a basis the listing by Markus Lindner, who published his list of Sitting Bull portraits in North Dakota History magazine. I think this is a great piece of work, if you like to comment on it, please post it here. Additions or corrections are welcome. Thank you! The PDFs can be found in the upper right corner of this page: www.american-tribes.com/Lakota/BIO/SittingBull-Hunkpapa.htmThank you Gregor for your contribution! Dietmar

Interesting. I really enjoyed looking at this. Just a few points for now: I'm sure I've read somewhere that the March of Civilisation photo may have been from the late 80s. I still think SB in the hat is later. He looks much older compared to the photos taken the previous year. N. W. Chadron is not a photographer but the company formed by Trager to sell the photos taken around the Wounded Knee massacre. On the subject of the hat, I know it's been claimed that he didn't wear a hat (the beaver one excepted) until after his association with Cody, but DeCost Smith states he was wearing one when he met him in, the best I can work out, 1884. I have yet to be convinced the Anderton photo does actually show SB. Same with the photo of SB and the scaffold. There are at least two more early sketches of Sitting Bull in Canada. I think both are by Richard Barrington Nevitt, a member of the NWMP. There's also a sketch of him as he surrendered in the US, in which he wears goggles (BEFORE Fort Buford) and has a bandana tied around his head. Here's a painting by Gilbert Gaul, who did work at Standing Rock, but this is obviously taken from one of the Barry photos and featured in the 1894 census: Here's another Farny Sitting Bull; this time dated 1899: This is one of my favourite Sitting Bull paintings - by Thomas Lasansky. Hi Graham, thanks for the comments. Relating to the Anderton and scaffold photographs, I also would’nt bet $ 100 on them. The Elders in the Canadian Anderton photo in front of the pole remind me of Running Antelope and Rain-in-the-face from the known photograph "Five noted Chiefs/ 1881" which shows Antelope and Rain with hats together with Gall, Crawler, Low Dog and Spotted Eagle in front of an Army tent. I personally do believe that the Anderton photo show Canadian Indians, e.g. Plains Cree. Regarding the scaffold photo: nobody can be sure, that it is really Iyotake Tatanka. I do not believe that he would have allowed to be photographed in such a situation. Toksha ake Gregor

"I do not believe that he would have allowed to be photographed in such a situation." I agree, though someone clearly did. The fact that he seems to be wearing a shirt tucked into a pair of trousers doesn't strike me as right for that date, although I grant you, that probably has more to do with my view of the man through rose-coloured spectacles! If you blow up the image, I don't think it even looks like him. "Elders in the Canadian Anderton photo in front of the pole remind me of Running Antelope and Rain-in-the-face from the known photograph "Five noted Chiefs/ 1881" which shows Antelope and Rain with hats together with Gall, Crawler, Low Dog and Spotted Eagle in front of an Army tent. I personally do believe that the Anderton photo show Canadian Indians, e.g. Plains Cree." I'm pretty sure they'd just been given the hats and jackets in that photo. Yeah, they probably Cree or Blackfoot. Blowing it up, the hairstyles of some of the men don't look right. One of the men at the left appears to have a beaded/quilled disk in the centre of his shirt, something more usually associated with the Cree or Blackfoot. You know, if Anderton takes SB's photo - the first - surely it would be reproduced as an engraving in newspapers in Canada and the US and probably in the UK too and we'd all know about it. And if he had the opportunity to take this group photo, surely he would have had the opportunity to take others. The only Anderton photo that shows a Lakota for sure (that I've seen) is the one of Long Dog. Here's SB's first grave site: Here's another SB painting I like: No idea who painted it, unfortunately. Here's Standing Holy by Gilbert. Late 1880s? Is it the same girl?

I´m with you both on the Anderton photo... probably Cree or Blackfoot.
The last photo is more likely a girl called Sunshine, despite the inscription on the photo. I´m pretty sure she´s not SB´s daughter Standing Holy.
The last Sitting Bull painting isn´t my cup of tea. He looks like a christian saint in this one.

If I remember correctly, there was a series representing various leaders in the style of ikons. I like the irony!

I guess this is another one in the Fort Randall series of 1882:

I knew I had another one, somebody added, rather poorly, the braids and feathers... I guess he thought it would sell better this way.

Hi Dietmar, I agree with you. The little girl in the Gilbert photograph is definitely not Standing Holy. Here a comparison of the little Misses "sunshine": CU Gregor

Thanks Jeroen, never seen it before. He´s more likely Sitting Bull´s stepson I think. Obviously the same who was photographed by Barry as John Sitting Bull.
Some questions regarding Gregor´s files:
Any comments on the photo by an unknown photographer at the end of part 1B? Is it really Sitting Bull? Who are the others? I don´t see Thunder Hawk in the photo, so perhaps Good Bear? What do you think?
I believe that the man who is labelled Louis or John Sitting Bull "as a teenager" in the D.F. Barry photo (with horned headdress) is not the same as the man Barry photographed later several times, and who is in Jeroen´s last picture above. Very confusing.

I've seen that man labelled as Jumping Bull.
