On sale at HA: Isn't the same man photographed by Moorhouse between 1910 and 1920? Any idea about his identity? Thanks.

Hi jinlian,
I can´t say anything about the names, but I believe they are two different persons.
Greetings
Dietmar

I'm not so sure about this not being the same man. As many historical photographs are shown the "wrong" way (mirrored -- the whole Throssel collection at the UWy database is mirrored!) which had even lead historians to believe that Billy the Kid was left-handed, I flipped the picture of "Aged Crow Man" over. Though I'm still not convinced that this must be the same man, now there are quite some similarities in some wrinkles. Just an attempt at answering that question. Even if both men were the same person, the identity is not yet answered -- "Crow Chief" can mean a lot of things, even a personal name. Attachments:

Thanks for making the enlarged comparison available. I vote for two different men. The hairlines are very different and the nostrils are absolutely different. Looking at them feature by feature, I see little in common.
I've been told the best way to determine identities is to compare their ears but, unfortunately, that is not possible here.

Thanks everyone for your replies and sorry if it took me so long to check out this thread (btw, wouldn't be possible to have a feature allowing complete view of all the new updated threads?). The nose detail is unfortunately not decisive in identifications, since a little nose crinkling can make a lot of difference. I agree that the ear detail would help, since the chin and cheekbones , although quite similar, don't look identical.
Moorehouse worked mostly with Cayuse, Walla Walla and Umatilla subjects, but he made also some Crow portraits, one being the famous Two Leggings one.

Jinlian: At the bottom of the message index page, under "Forum Statistics", there is a link "View the 25 most recent posts of this forum." Is that what you mean? It took me a while to find this, but I look at it at least once a day (sometimes more!) and get all the latest posts for all the threads. A GREAT tool!
This site is simply terrific. I have several questions about ID's in photos I have and I couldn't find a better group to help me. (I have several questions on Spotted Tail family photos, which I've been studying for several years. I'm waiting for a couple of books, and then I'll post the photos in question.)

Thank you, Richard - I use that feature but sometimes I'm unable to log in for many days and the updates involve more than 25 threads... and I agree with you: this is a fantastic site!

I agree. I use the "View the 25 most recent posts of this forum" feature every day - but there are sometimes more than 25 posts in a day or - there are times I miss a day. Would the forum administrators consider changing it to "View the 50 most recent posts..." That would help some of us who can't log in every day. thanks, Barbara

Okay, I have changed that feature to "view the 50 most recent posts" now. It will probably take longer now to load the page, at least when many photos have been posted lately, so please let me know if you have problems with that.
Thanks for your kind words, Dick. I´m looking forward to see your photographs.
Best wishes
Dietmar

Thanks, Dietmar! I'm waiting for a book I ordered, "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Warriors" by Michelle Delaney of the Smithsonian. Several people have pointed out photos to me that are obviously in error. I see you increased the recent posts number to 50. FYI -- I have cable and it loads just as quickly. Perhaps it would help if the site announced new threads, also?
Great effort from all the creators, administrators, and members! I'm amazed at the European knowledge of American Indians! I wish Americans (especially students) had your interest.
