A widely known photograph is this one of Rabbit Tail, a Shoshoni scout. He was said to be scouting for Captain Ray´s company . Does anyone know who this Captain Ray was or what other details are known of Rabbit Tail´s life? Thanks. Dietmar

This looks like the same vest! Cotsiogo (Cadzi Cody), 1885; Eastern Shoshone known for his painting of traditional scenes on hides, ca. 1885:

I think you´re right Grahame.
In the meantime I found out that Captain Patrick Henry Ray was the Indian agent at Wind River Reservation in the 1890ies.
So I assume Rabbit Tail hadn´t fought at earlier battles like Rosebud, but was hired as a scout later at the agency.

Here's a Rabbit Tail by Joseph Henry Sharp. Date...? Don't know, but I'm guessing early 1900s or later. It may not be the same man, of course...
