I noticed their were a couple of pictures of Iron Wing here labeled as Sicangu. He was actually half Caucasian and half Minicoujou. He came to the Spotted Tail Agency about 1880 as a representative of the Northern Camps and Waglula. The army had invited Waglula because of his influence but instead Waglula sent a letter saying he was ill with Iron Wing. Iron Wing was supposed to be his replacement. The army refused to entertain Iron Wing as a serious replacement so they refused to meet with him. Iron Wing was not an elder so it was unusual that a man so young would be considered any kind of head man. However the fact he could speak English weighed as the main reason he was sent by Northern Camp elders. The Northern Camps did not trust the interpreters as most during that period had come over from the Mdewakan and other Minnesota bands which meant they spoke a different strain of the language...just enough to be dangerous.
I suspect these pictures were taken when he came down for that meeting. But since they were taken on Sicangu ground (Spotted Tail Agency) is probably why he was labeled Sicangu. Spotted Tail having been a relative of Waglula through Crazy Horse's wife was still in communication with Waglula. So posing for a picture with his friend's representative makes sense. The Iron Wing family is currently still living up on the Cheyenne River Rez and I have been asked to obtain copies of these pictures and have them put on a CD so they can have copies.

Brock,
very interesting information. I have researched a bit on Iron Wing some time ago. The Iron Wing in the photographs of 1880 also visited Carlisle that year to see his son and relatives, who entered school in 1879. His son there was Cecil Iron Wing. There were several Iron Wings, one Iron Wing settled later at Rosebud, if I remember correctly.

Dietmar,
Yes, they are one and the same. Iron Wing did visit Carlisle afterwards and later did move to Rosebud. However one of his sons, I'm not sure if was Cecil or not...have to ask...moved back to the Northern Camps. The family member who requested the pictures is Chauncy Iron Wing who also has a nickname that he's commonly referred to as Muscles. He kind of came out of the woodwork when apparently the moccasin telegraph up on Cheyenne River told him of his grandfather's mention in the upcoming documentary.
