Aho Everyone
As reported, the blizzard that hit us last week has been tough. But up in Parmelee on the Rosebud, the power is still off and could be for another TWO WEEKS. Elders and children are freezing. People are burning tires, mattresses, clothes etc to stay warm. They are out of food and water. People with medical conditions are not getting help. I am now hearing of deaths. The Red Cross finally arrived today, but there is only so much they can do. You all seem to get so much from Indian history and culture, it is time to give back. Most importantly, we need food and water. Or Please consider making a financial donation and sending it to
He Dog School Attn: Blizzard Relief He Dog School Road Parmelee, SD 57566
Other than food or water these are the items needed to help keep people warm.
Clothes Winter coats Hats Gloves Scarves Kerosene Heaters Flashlights Batteries Lamp oil Wood One burner propane ranges Matches Blankets Sleeping Bags Generators Candles
I am volunteering over there so you can be sure whatever you send will be given to the people. Anything!! EVen a pack of batteries is like gold right now. But time is of the essence here so please send whatever you can RIGHT NOW!!
Thanks. I knew I could count on you good folks on this board.

Miyelo,
thanks for letting us know. I hope we can do something.
I just heard there is another storm coming tonight. I got the information that Rosebud Casino's Quality Inn hotel is $46 per night for family and with children (under 12) if one has their enrollment card. Indian enrollment card is a must. (Meals are relatively cheap.) A friend just put part of her family and children in that hotel, so if someone out there is reading this, I hope it is of some help.
Later

I´ve been told that at the moment people are helping each other in Parmalee enormously.
A small plane dropped immediate needs for families who are way out in the country. Families with bigger barns came to take some of his cows to their place. Many young people, also from Sinte Gleska college, are helping He Dog school with serving meals to Parmelee residents. Some areas like He Dog and many other areas do have their lights, heat, etc. back on.
Church groups are also renting rooms for others who need. Others are taken to larger location to stay warm and be fed until this passes. The large grocery store in Mission, near Parmelee, along with other stores have on their own contributed stuff for the people. Many people are helping each other.
So I still hope things are getting better…

hmmm...don't know about the plane story, haven't heard that one. but yes things are getting better. the people in the country still do not have power but we have been doing feasts and people are joining together to help. I got the Black Hills Recovery to truck in some firewood and lots of people are sending things to He Dog school. yesterday's blizzard was cold and wind but today was nice and tomorrow sunny and almost 50 so that is good. getting better but need power and heat!! and light!!

the entire northern plains are under an arctic freeze. started with a blizzard on saturday. right now here on Rosebud it is -28 below zero with wind. yesterday's high was -2 below zero. not good for anybody. i have heat and am still freezing right now. the wind comes thru the walls, the outlets, everywhere and anywhere. Extremely hard on the elders, we are trying to get wood out to them. besides what Gordie mentions, you can help by going to www.friendsofpineridgereservation.org and to the link foundation (google it)
