Thomas Stoneman, who was a Yanktonai, was one of the policemen detailed to arrest Sitting Bull in 1890. Later he draw a painting, possibly around 1925, of the scene of Sitting Bull´s death and the fighting that broke out. The painting is at the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Bismarck, ND. Behind the log houses you can see a tipi and the dance ground of the Ghostdancers. Sitting Bull is held in the middle of the picture by two policemen and gets killed. Afraid of Bear (Bull Head) is bleeding from several wounds. Sitting Bull is also shown lying dead a little bit below that scene. A policeman has smashed in his head. The picture is quite large, but I hope you can discern some names on the painting.

You´re welcome! I wish I could read all names in the painting... I scanned it from a book where it is printed very small... so unfortunately this is the best resolution I can get.

Joyce Szabo's The Arrest and Killing of Sitting Bull in American Indian Art magazine, Autumn, 1996; pp 64-75.
There are several other versions featured.
The above vesion is also in Christian F Feest's Th Cultures of Native North Americans. though it's a fairly small picture.

Hi Grahame
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I've looked at the magazine, but Dietmar's picture looks like it comes from a different source. It has a bit more detail and is also coloured.

Grahame is right, I scanned the photo from the German edition of Christian Feest´s book. It is that small indeed, so you can´t see all names in the blown up scan.

It's a pity that there isn't a better copy. I'm not sure if I have the Feest book.

I've found the picture in Feest's book. It's a slightly better reproduction.
