After the battle of the Washita where Chief Black Kettle was killed, Custer held Cheyenne women and children prisoners for 4 months. During that time "Monesetah" was a Cheyenne woman in her mid 20's, and she gave birth to a baby girl. After that, she was held as a prisoner for 2 months. In Cheyenne oral tradition, it is said that Custer then fancied her as his second wife and impregnated her. He promised to come back and Monesetah waited and was faithful to his promise. When she learned of Custers death it is said that she took a knife to herself and caused many cuts and stab wounds.
Another veteran warrior of the Little Bighorn battle Joseph White Cow Bull said he met Monesetah and she had a little boy with blonde streaks in his hair. There are is no hard evidence of Custer fathering a child with one of his Cheyenne captives. After his death, Libby Custer wrote two books detailing his and her life together and painted him as a saint and a martyr for white expansion and Manifest Destiny. There was no mention of anything out of the ordinary.
The U.S. could have easily made sure that his boy and any record never survived the challenges of time. Are there any Cheyennes here who have any more information? Last, I am in no way trying to tarnish the name of George Custer or disrespect him. I am just looking for the truth. Did one of Americas greatest heroes father a native american child?
