Jinlian,
I know you live in Italy now and have lived in the Far East. If you don't mind my asking, how did you become interested in the Crow? Your knowledge of them is very impressive!
Diane

Hi Diane, I guess it all began with Plenty Coups' autobiography (the only text about the Crow translated and published in Italy) and then I realized I want to know more and more...and now there's a special Crow section in my bookshelf (I've one about Lakotas as well! As weird as it may sound...) I've no special knowledge, actually, just passion. Hope to transmit it to other people too!

You are doing a great job of transmitting it to others.
Some of the Crow are conflicted about their role in the Little Bighorn. I've heard Joe Medicine Crow pretty much apologize for being on the wrong side of the battle. It's nice to have someone presenting the Crow in all of their glory.
Thank you!

When I read Chief Joe Medicine Crow (I wholly agree with H. Viola when he says he's "a real national treasure"!)'s preface to the memories of Thomas A. Laforge, my impression was that he was quite bitter because at the time the Crow scouts were never given any credit by the whites when telling their own version of the LBH fights, and now they're blamed because they fought "on the wrong side". I don't think they were actually- they were just doing what they felt right for their own people (and Plenty Coups stated the same thing in his late years). There was no idea of a "Pan -Indian" nation at the time, but many people tend to forget it... On the other hand, how can't you love people like these? !

On the other hand, how can't you love people like these? ! ...just ask a Lakota haha i have photos of Plenty Coup's home...I got to go up into his private room that is usually closed off to visitors. It is up in the attic. He used to go up there to pray. His stuff is still up there. I can try to post some photos if you have never been there before so you can see them. Don't care much for the Crow's history but PC was a good man when you let go of his government butt kissing!

Thanks, I've already seen it - a lady sharing my interest in the Crow tribe kindly shared the pictures she took in the room. Reading your last statement, it's obvious that you "don't care much for the Crows' history" -(Plenty Coups' life and politic attitude were far more complex than the way you put it) and maybe not even for the Lakotas', as most of them made peace with the Crows in the 1880s and exchanged friendly visits.

um. i am lakota. and no, there is not much ''peace'' between them. just ask any Lakota or Cheyenne who was on last year's Big Horn Ride. I was there too. Basically the Crow did what the US told them so they could get the Lakota/Cheyennes. Pretty much why they have the best rez to this day. That is what I mean by ''don't care much for their history." In my opinion, Spotted Tail, Red Cloud, and Plenty Coup were not that complex. The white writers and history books are what make them ''complex" to people who have never lived on a northern plains reservation. There are plenty of men just like them here today. Are there two sides to this?? Yes. Of course. but you really have to know the real history and live and try to survive here before you can really judge. Just my opinion. Don't want to open a can of worms cuz it just isn't worth it.

Well, of course there are two sides of this and the Apsalooka have their own stories about who wanted to "get" whom. As you yourself stated, there are also other Lakotas today who have a different view about the present and historical situation, so I guess there isn't in fact a single "real history". But you're right in saying that it's better to let the can of worms closed. Let's save them for fishing! ;D

YEAH! Let's go fishing! btw--i really like Plenty Coups. He was different and I think sincere, which is the BIG difference. When I was at his house I was walking the Medicine Path and looked down and found a very old thumb scraper. I picked it up and was about to pocket it and something told me to leave it. I left it.

miyelo,
I would love for you to post the photos of Plenty Coup's home. It would be great if you'd post them on the Apsalooka board.
Thanks! Diane

miyelo, I'm sorry I saw your post too late to help. I saw the photos you posted and thank you for doing that. In case anyone else is wondering, this is how to post photos directly in a message: Photos must be on a server so they have an address. Here is an example in code of how you would insert a photo in a message: www.lbha.org/images/Indian.jpg[/img) (The last parenthesis should be replaced by a bracket to make the photo show.) You can also put the address in your message, highlight it, and click the fourth icon from the left in the message menu bar, the one that looks like a little picture. That will place the image tags around the address. If you don't have access to a server, you can send Dietmar or me the photos, and we can post them in the forum for you. Just please be sure to specify where you want the photo to appear (the board, thread, reply number).
