A friend has sent me this one: Crow Dance (on the left there's a ak'bi'arusacari'ca, one of the clowns who provided "comic sketches" during ceremonies and dances.

The above image was taken around 1900 by Fred Miller at Crow Agency. The Smithsonian Archives has this photograph as "Three Crow men (from left): Big Medicine, Fog in the Morning, Takes Himself" - dentifications supplied by Barney Old Coyote (and Crow Indians), BIA, February 3, 1966. It isn't even listed as a Miller photograph. However, in Fred Miller - Photographer of the Crow the same image is labeled "Big Medicine, Alligator Stands Up, Hunts the Enemy" - identification comes from Miller's original plate. In fact, from the only other photo of him I know of, the second man from left looks just Alligator Stands Up.

From SIRIS {"Group of Men in Native Dress and with Non-Native Man In Military Uniform n.d."} Credited to James E. Taylor. *Note: While the hand written caption reads "Crow Indians" they do not look like Crow to my eye. Any comments?

Hin,
excellent photo, but it is a Stanley Morrow photo of Mandan and Hidatsa and at least one Yanktonai (Medicine Bear). I have to look for the other identifications...
Greetings
Dietmar

Isn't Crow Breast (Hidatsa) in the group too?

Crow leaders - the date is surely later than indicated - mid 90s-early 1900s... A Haynes photo from the Golden Spike series

E.S. Curtis (fourth from left) and Custer's Crow scouts (from left - Goes Ahead, Hairy Moccasin, White Man Runs Him and, first from right, Curley) Hello Jinlian, I think this photo on Weir Point, about 1907. From the left: Goes Ahead, Hairy Moccasin, White Man Runs Him, Edward S. Curtis and interpreter Alexander B. Upshaw. (“The Papers of EDWARD S. CURTIS; Relating to Custer’s Last Battle” by James S. Hutchins) Best Regards from Jari

Thank you, Jari. If the photo was taken in 1907, that would explain Upshaw's presence (btw, he looked older than his actual age - was born in 1875), since he died two years later, killed in a brawl at the borders of Crow reservation. Son of war leader Crazy Pend d'Oreille, Upshaw had been educated in Carlisle. I think there's even a photograph of him, together with Red Cloud and Jack Red Cloud taken at Pine Ridge, will check Goodyear's book tonight.
