Hello My husbands great grandmother was reported by family lore to be a Shawnee indian named Marn Barbarus. It has been suggested that she was a cousin to Chief Santana. I have a lot of information after she married Robert S Stout, however nothing concrete on her birth? The family bible listed her parents as Joshua E Stout and Elizabeth Myers. I would really like to find out more about this possible connection and why she may have taken the name Sarah Barbee.n Any information would be appreciated. Wendy

Hi Wendy, just came across your query. My step-dad is Dennis Beddow. He is the great grandson of Sarah Barbee. His mother is Dorthy Stout. We have pretty much the same information as you have. But we are in possession of that family bible. My stepdad Dennis is 80 years old now, he’s frail but his mind is sharp he’s mother Dorthy told him family stories. He doesn’t do internet but I could put you in contact with him if your interested. I believe your husband and him are cousins. For now, Barbara

This story says Marn Barbarus was Cheyenne: www.genealogy.com/ftm/a/n/d/Jo-Anderson-washington/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0124.html Robert S. Stout (son of Jonathan Stout and Sarah) was born November 05, 1818, and died December 04, 1888 in Sullivan City, Missouri. He married Sarah Barbee on October 19, 1842 in Orange Co. Indiana. Notes for Robert S. Stout: Many of Robert S. Stout's family are buried at New Town, Sullivan County, Missouri. Letter written to Fred deKrafft Sprague, Jr. on 4/17/1996 from his cousin June. . . . . . Robert S. Stout made many trips hauling through Indian land. He got along well with the Indians and spent much time with them. One tribe was the Cheyenne; later he met and married a Cheyenne maiden. Her name Marn Barbarus (Indian Name). Before the wedding, which was a great event, she took as her last name Barbee and in doing so she took more of the white man's ways. It is thought Marn was a cousin of Chief Satanta. She took to white man's ways of life. To this marriage union several children were born. . .

I'm a direct descendant of Moin H Payne; my great grandfather. I checked the link above and find all to be factual except this: in Moin's handwritting, he has always written Shawnee, not Cheyenne. He and I had many conversations, as his love for heritage was contageous and now we pioneer through, learning so much with the advent of internet. I hope this helps. My brother recently reached out to the Shawnee tribe, to inquire about the Dawes & any history that may be had. He was told there are 3 seperate Shawnee tribes, so perhaps with some digging, we'll all find the answer to the mystery of this beautiful lady~
