John Karl Hillers was one of the most important early Western photographers. Born in Hanover, Germany, he came to the U.S. in 1852. At the beginning of the 1870s he worked for John Wesley Powell and travelled with him on his expeditions. In 1875 he photographed the Indian delegates who assembled at the grand council in Okmulgee, Indian Territory. He took a big group photo of all delegates, and created a series of photographs with different groups from various Indian nations. The well known pictures he took of the Cheyenne delegates have been often identified incorrectly. I´m glad Koos van Oostrom, who created the following comparison montages of Hillers´ portraits, allowed me to post them at our boards with corrected names. THANK YOU KOOS! I thought we had another thread with more photos - unless I was thinking of this one: amertribes.proboards.com/thread/1837/identification-southern-plains?page=2Daughters of Big Mouth, Arapaho Yellow Bear, Arapaho Bear Robe and wife, Arapaho Sun Boy, Kiowa, decked out in boots and jacket, though his military trousers seem to have been converted to leggings, judging from the breechclout Anyhow, there are a few photos by Hillers currently on ebay: Labelled as Big Spotted Horse, Pawnee, but I believe it's Lone Chief I've also seen this man labeled as Big Spotted Horse This group were described on ebay as Sac and Fox Kickapoo camp - though I suspect this may have been taken elsewhere Said to be Arapaho but this group is Comanche and that's Dangerous Eagle holding the hat in the centre of the frame. I think that's Cheevers and his wife at the left and Tabenanaka at the right. Said to be an image from the council proceedings
