Another Tuell portrait of American Horse, a companion of the one posted by Jeroen: I think this (portrait by Choate, Carlisle 1880) has been already posted somewhere, but at a lower resolution -incidentally, it is one of my favourite AH photographs. A magnificent looking man, indeed.

From ebay: "Sioux man, American Horse, 1930s" I'd say Ben American Horse...

A friend on Rosebud recently directed me to "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Warriors" the Kasebier photos edited by Michelle Delaney of the Smithsonian. My friend is a descendant of American Horse and noted the photo on page 101: First, the photo appears to be of Thomas, son of the chief, and his wife. But, what is striking is the display of intimacy (closeness, touching his shoulder.) I said that I hadn't seen anything like this. Thus, the question to the group: is this a rare occurrence?

Hi, I'm new to this site but was hoping to get a list of the men in the photo with Robert AH, it's very small and I would like to know who they were.
Thank you.

Hi, I just wanted to add that my Mom called him Uncle Robert American Horse and his wife was Nancy Revenger AH, "Aunt Nancy". They would come by team and wagon to take care of my Mom and her siblings when my grandmother was sick or gone. After Robert passed away she would come by herself and camp along the way. Manderson to Martin is a long way by wagon.
Thanks, Wanbliho

Wanbliho, welcome to these message boards, good to have you here.
Dick, indeed there are very few examples of Indian couples showing intimacy in historical photographs. I remember seeing only two or three at all, one of a Paiute couple comes to my mind. I would assume that in these cases the photographer asked the couples to sit in these poses, rather than they have done it on their own.

An "air-brushed" American Horse, presumably from his stint with Cody in 1887:

Well, no...they look fairly different. Beautiful image of Big Turkey, by the way.

I think we'll have to agree to differ on that one.
