For those not aware ...
Legislation has passed in the US Government to allow mining at Oak Flats.
This piece of land is sacred and traditional to the Apache people.
A company called "Resolution Copper", really a newly created
subsidiary from the Rio Tinto and BHP mining companies, will begin the process
of DIGGING UP 2400 acres of land at Oak Flats this year.
The Oak Flats land was set aside by a Presidential order by Pres. Eisenhower
in the 1950's. The land has been protected because of its scenic beauty
and its special significance to Native Americans. That is ... protected until
now.
Although Arizona congressmen promised to consult tribal elders before any moves
were made, SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN included a sneaky piece of legislation within
a Defense authorization bill at the end of 2014. The Bill passed, and because
it passed, the "land grab" from McCain has also passed in Congress. Therefore,
the way is clear for mining companies to begin tearing up the ground at
Oak Flats.
This development is a major insult to the elders of the Nde people, not to mention
all Nde tribal members and Native Americans.
In addition
to Native American and indigenous rights groups, a number of environmental
groups have also expressed outrage at the actions of John McCain (notably the
Deep Green movement - which has been outspoken). The issue boils down to a
fundamental philosophical difference between those people in our society
who wish to exploit the Earth and support "greed" at all costs,
versus those people who wish to protect
the Earth and work towards a society built on sustainable lifetsyles.
It's a pretty good bet that you will
see demonstrations and activism because of the Oak Flats land grab!
If you in Arizona, please consider supporting these activist marches if they
are happening during the time of your stay.
