Meany Interview, 1907:
Eagle Elk
Ich-hahka- Wam bali
Pine Ridge S.D. 10 July 1907
John Monroe, Interpreter
Born in Yankton, S.D.
54 years old
Never had any fighting medicine.
Three days and two nights he fasted on a hill at the edge of the Black Hills but he saw nothing there.
When 14 years old he first went into war. Council Bear was leader of that party. They went against the Crows but he did not scalp any Crow. The party killed and scalped four Crows. It was near the Big Horn Mountains where the Missouri River forks.
He participated in many battles against the Crows, Shoshones, Blackfeet, Shaheas, Hoheys, Omahas, Utes [black men].
The hardest fight was with the Crows at the mouth of Arrow Creek. He thinks he was about 20 years old then. The chief was his brother Kills First, but there were other chiefs beside. He thinks there were about 1000 warriors – Sioux, Cheyennes, Arapahoes on the one side. On the other side were over 1000 of Crows and Nez Perces. The fight began at daylight and they quit at dark. Both sides lost heavily but neither side won. Many were wounded and about ten killed on each side. He won no honors there.
He won honors by striking two Crows and he got 28 head of horses from them in another fight.
He fought against General Miles at Tongue River. He got no honors, it was winter time and cold. He was under Chief Crazy Horse at that time. They were in a village when General Milles charged on them. Six Sioux and three soldiers were killed but both sides stopped fighting and held their ground.
He was in the Custer Battle in which Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were the leaders. He took three horses with packs on. He was asked who killed Custer by a man in the East but no one knew Custer in the fight.
He was a policeman at the time of the Wounded Knee Battle and so he was here at the agency.
He only saw Sitting Bull once in war. He was not a great fighter but his name was got up in not an honorable way. He got his name up by white men because he was a great horse-thief. Sitting Bull was not a great medicine man.
He thinks Crazy Horse was the greatest Sioux leader.
He thinks that Red Cloud is something like Sitting Bull. Got his name and honors up by white men.
