In the April 7, 1904, train wreck in Maywood, just west of Chicago, of 63 Pine Ridge Sioux on their way to join Cody's Wild West show, the official reports list three Lakota killed and badly mangled. One of these was Kills Ahead. However in the Elmos Kills Ahead (1849-1904) and Reuben Kills Ahead (1883-1904), both are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Pine Ridge, Shannon county.
Did the newspapers get it really wrong and conflate the two, Elmos and Reuben Kills Ahead, into one mangled body, which the family separated out?
