No worries Mithlo. It's very good that you are reminding me. I need to get going and prepare those arrows. I am hoping to hunt with my new bow this year. :-)

I am working on arrowheads made from natural materials. I will show some pictures soon. I am trying bone and hard wood as materials. maybe some antler material if I can find it.

I know how to knapp........learned it from my father....a well-known flint-knapper here in southwest Oklahoma....but Bone....I like Bone! Go out onto the land and find where a cow has died a few years back.....pick up the shoulder-blade and hold it up to the sun, you should be able to see "slight" light through the center area's of it. Pick up a leg bone and "bust-out" these thin bone pieces......find an area of sandstone to file them into shape and a sharp point. They should be about an inch long and 1/2 inch across the base (Bottom). The thickness of these is about the same thickness of an average "Ice-cream stick".......not only easy to make....but sharp....and strong....with the weight being "bout perfect" for arrow's.

Sounds very good. I'm glad that you recommend bone because I already have some good bone supply sitting in my garage. I wasn't sure that it would take a good edge on the arrows, but now that you've told me that it works well I am encouraged. I was also going to do steel, and I might still do that. But it is much hardr to work with and very heavy. Bone is light and strong, and definitely my tools will be easier to use on it :-)

Mithlo ...
have not forgotten. making progress here on several different things:
1. I am working on homemade arrow points made from copper and bone. The copper is a quick way of making points for target shooting. The bone arrowheads are for hunting arrows. I am still testing the copper points, but it looks hopeful for soft targets. I will post pix soon.
2. I am training my body to be stronger with my recurve bow. It is a strong bow (50-pounds) and I can only hold the bow at full bend for maybe a count of 1 to 10 (or 4 slow breaths). So I am repeating this process of slowly bending the bow, then slowly releasing it. And repeating this as a way to make my chest, arms and shoulders stronger. It will take time to build up strength!
3. I am in touch with a local Indian reservation in California and have asked them for permission to hunt on their land. If the Tribal Council approves it, I will share any meat I take with them (like a 50-50 split). I will start with small game, and then go to deer in the Fall season. So I am working on building that friendship now.
4. I am sending moral support to the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho who are opposing the buffalo kill being done at Yellowstone National Park. The Park Service there is killing 600 buffalo this winter. Their herd is too big - but there are much better ways of handling this than just to send the animals off to be slaughtered. Also, no need to point out that this brings back many bad memories of what happened on the Great Plains at the end of the Indian Wars. So I have sent an email to the Nez Perce and encouraged them to keep speaking out ... our country needs to seek win-win solutions for these kinds of problems and not just set aside Native American concerns.
all the best, dT

OK .. don't want my buddy Mithlo to think I'm slumming over here. Here ya' go Mithlo ... my first two home-made arrowheads. The one of the left is a copper point - very easy to make, pretty strong, and very inexpensive. So the copper is good just for target shooting and small game - rabbits and turkeys. The arrowhead on the right is my first bone point. Had a LOT of fun making this one, and it looks like it will work fine. For young Native Americans who want to try out this arrow making technique, I will post more pix soon showing exactly how these arrowheads are done. all the best, Pete (dT)
