;D ;D ;D this is one of the best things about this board. If someone in here dont eventually find out the answer, then I think no one ever will... this just seems to be a "small" challenge once again. ;D

High Bear by Rhinehart - Is this the man from Standing Rock? Is this the same man as above? On liveauctioneers he's listed as High Bear, Northern Cheyenne; however, it's a Barry photo and most of his work was with people from Standing Rock

The last two High Bear photos are definetely not Cheyenne. It must be the Hunkpapa High Bear, we had him recently in a Standing Rock group photo in another thread (group photo identifications). Here is the Huffman photo of "Sioux Chief Hump and head warriors": Huffman identified this group as, "Hump, war chief of Minneconjou Sioux, with head men - Tall Bear, Wht [White] Magpie, Wolf Voice, Big Road & Wolf Robe." Properly interpreted, Big Road becomes Broad Trail. Tall Bear, a medicine man, is seated in the centerholding a staff wrapped with otter skin with one hand and a bunch of sacred sage with the other.(from Brown/Felton: The Frontier Years, p.255) Hard to identify who is who. Does anyone know?

you can post any photo by yourself if you upload them first. One place where you can upload any pics. www.aijaa.com though that is in Finnish language but easy to use. Then just attach the link of the image in here and youre done.

TATANKA: I'm the gulty! When i have started this thread, i was almost sure that HIGH/TALL BEAR showned in the first photo (in close-up) was a Minneconjou. Now, i know that him perhaps was Minneconjou, Sans Arc, Oglala, Hunkpapa or Cheyenne!!! It'is not fantastic?

Look at this - the signatories of 1877 Agreement with the Sioux nation, Northern Arapaho and Cheyenne, available here: oyate1.proboards58.com/index.cgiand see just how many prominent High Bears there were 1876-77!

Thank you for that picture! One more quick question -- what year was it taken?

In Hardorff's collection of accounts of the last days of Crazy Horse, he includes a picture of High Bear. He claims it was taken in Washington in 1877 but it's by Mitchell. Same series as Pawnee Killer and Little Big Man; it can also be found in the Crazy Horse Surrender Ledger, where a High Bear is listed under the Cut Off Sioux. This man was a leader of a small band of Sans Arc, closely affiliated with the Minicoujou of Touch the Clouds and, therefore, Crazy Horse. He travelled to Ft Robinson with TTC and CH. Now it gets confusing: at the large council in May 77, when he spoke, High Bear claimed that he used to be a Brule but had joined the Minicoujous. He is at the extreme left of the third rows in this stereoview 'collage' of photographs by Mitchell:

Of course, it's a) clear that the man in the Mitchell photo is not the man in the Huffman and b) we're assuming the man in the Mitchell photo IS the man referred to in the Hardorff book. This MAY not be the case. After all, he uses a Mitchell photo of Slow Bull instead of He Dog and, let's face it, he's not the only writer who makes mistakes like this...

Aehmnnn...now I'm totally lost, so you were talking about Tall Bear Miniconjou and I was talking about High Bear Miniconjou? ...or WTF... And now about He Dog, are you talking about the Oglala He Dog: ...or are you talking about Brule He Dog: ...? People mix them up pretty often too... ;D
