I recently purchased from an used book store an exhibition catalog from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: Images of a Vanished Life: Plains Indian Drawings from the Collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts . It has an intro by John C. Ewers and an article about the history of the drawings. The images themselves were made by the first groups of northern plains children sent to Hampton Institute in the late 1870s and are mostly done in the traditional style. They are not only beautiful but are, of course, also good illustrations of tribal history and culture. Some of the names will be familiar: Andrew Fox (future son in law of Sitting Bull, etc.) and the children are from the northern Lakota bands, Yankton/Yanktonais, and Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara. Good explanations are given for each drawing. click link for cover image Attachments:
