On october 21, Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized in Rome by the Pope. Kateri Tekakwitha, also known as the "Lily of the Mohawks" , is the first Native American woman, that has been canonized. Tekakwitha had been declared venerable in 1943 by the Catholic Church and beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II An estimated 2,000 aboriginal people from across Canada and the United States travelled to the Vatican to attend the canonization mass.
