One of the few Comanche leaders of whom we have several portraits by different photographers is Esitoya, sometimes spelled Asatoyet or Asa-Toyeh. Usually his name is translated as "Gray Leggings", although I read in Tom´s "The Comanches: A History" esitoya means "Gray Mountain". In the same book (page 512) we find an interesting footnote, that Esitoya was one of two Mexican brothers captured by Joe Attocknie´s grandfather about 1850, and when later offered freedom, they both decided to stay with the Comanches. Esitoya later led a band of Penateka Comanches (150 people in the early 1870s). He was known for guiding Colonel Grierson to the site of Fort Sill in December 1868 and acted as a scout for the US troops on other occasions. When he died in 1878, his funeral was attended by the Ft. Sill garrison. He was buried in the post cementary. Esitoya by W.S. Soule Esitoya by A. Gardner 1872 Esitoya by A. Gardner 1872 Esitoya by A.
