D.M.Park Good to hear from you ! Sorry, it took me so long to respond. I have been busy and haven't been on this site much lately. I did recognize your family name; "Jack Whipple". Do you have a copy of: "PRAIRIE PROGRESS IN WEST CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA" 1968 ASSEMBLED AND COMPILED BY "THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF OLD STANLEY COUNTY" ? The book was published by Historical Society of Old Stanely County and Printed by Midwest Beach, Inc. Sioux Falls, So. Dak. In this book there is a article about my G.G. Grandfather Daniel A. Powell Sr.. Also, included in the same article, it mentions your G. Grandfather, Jack Whipple. It states that he was one of the white men who worked at Fort Robertson. I do not have the whole book and if, you don't already have it, this might be a possibility of a reference, to look for a photo.

American Tribe Members and visitors,
In my recent research and interest I have been mostly directed (focused) toward trying to again, find out more about my heritage and family connections. As most of you know that do this, it's far from being easy. Therefore, I find myself reaching out and asking for help.
My main interest has been based on trying confirm a statement made by a family member while, he did this very same thing. Family heritage research. The statement was made in his research notes that, my G.G. Grandmother Top Of The Head (aka, Pecokanwin), was a niece to Red Cloud. A strong clue appeared a few years ago when, the name of a Red Cloud - Garnier appeared on the list of names of, my G.G.G. Grandfather, Charging Eagle's Allotment.
Of course, one thing leads to another when doing this research. I found myself buried in reading things about Frank Grouard and Baptiste Garnier (aka, Little Bat). Then, while reading in a book titled; "Blood Song" by Terry C. Johnston, I found a possible clue or, lead concerning Grouard. While reading the post in the Threads here on A.T.'s concerning the Little Bat and Grouard connection, it is stated that Grouard may have been married to Little Bat's sister. The author, Terry C. Johnston states in his book that, one of Grouard's wives was a sister of He Dog. He also states, He Dog was not happy about the marriage.
So, this sent me further into the researching Census records of He Dog, etc. A few things were noted here.: 1.) 1896 Census - He Dog age, 59 listed with; Wife, Rock age, 52 Daughter, Keeps Her Horse age, 22 Brother-in-law, Crazy Dog age, 63
2.) 1888 Census - Crazy Dog age, 53 listed with; Wife, Pretty Camp age, 49 [1890 Census aka, Pretty Lodge - 1893 Census aka, Pretty Travois] Mother-in-law, On The Butte age, 63
3.) 1897 Census - (To make it brief); a.) Charging Eagle is listed with his wife, Paints Herself Yellow. b.) Chips is listed with his family. [There is a Chips also listed on the Charging Eagle Allotment] c.) Another younger Crazy Dog appears with his wife. This Crazy Dog is approximately 21 years younger then the one mentioned earlier. Possibly, a son of the earlier mentioned.
4.) 1898 Census - (To make it brief); a.) The future wife of, Charging Eagle named; Breaks Rock appears with her sister, Turns Over. b.) Charging Eagle listed with wife Paints Herself Yellow c.) Chips is listed with his family. d.) Coffee is listed with a Granddaughter. e.) The younger Crazy Dog is listed with his wife.
5.) 1899 Census - (To make it brief); a.) He Dog is listed with his wife, daughter and Brother-in-law/Crazy Dog.
REFER: 1.) "Blood Song" by; Terry C. Johnston 2.) LaDeane Miller files
Closing Comments: Thanks for reading and if, you have any information that might help me or, want to make comments...please, feel free to do so. Time for me to get ready to go to work.
Sincerely, kakarns

I was re-reading my most recent post (dated; Jan. 28th, 2016)when, I realized I forgot something important. In 4.)a.), I mention the listing in the 1898 Census which, includes the future wife of Charging Eagle. Listed with her, is her sister Turns Over. I forgot to mention the future wife that I was speaking about was Breaks Rock (aka, Brave Rock). I have went back and edited the post to include, Breaks Rock.
Something else of importance in reference to the two sister's, is that they, at one time, were both married to; Crow On The Head. Some Census have Crow On The Head listed as; Crown Head. Also, something else to note here is, that in the 1894 Census, Brave Rock's name is changed to; Breaks Rock.
In the process of, the Charging Eagle Probate, it was determined that Brave Rock and Breaks Rock were one in the same person.

kakarns, what is the Moses One Feather connection to your family? I have found something about Moses that is very interesting. Do you know if there is a relation to Gerald One Feather, the former Pine Ridge Tribal Chairman? I met Gerald last fall in Rapid City but we didn't talk history unfortunately. Kingsley, I stumbled across this 1894 Census tonight while, doing other research. William One Feather was listed in several Census records as a Grandson to Charging Eagle and his wife. At times, in these Census, his wife was listed as "No Name". At other times, his wife was listed as All Holy, All Of It or, All Over, etc.. However, when I compare the ages of all of the names listed, they are all close to the same. Anyway, when I found this 1894 Census again tonight, I remembered you had asked me the question, in the quote above. This Census shows William One Feather listed as the son of Moses One Feather and Jennie One Feather.: Refer: LaDeane Miller files kakarns

kakarns,
you mentioned that one of the half-sisters of Black Lodge (Spotted Tail's wife) was Elbow or White Mountain. You listed one of Elbow's children as Bluffing Bear.
According to the genealogy information anthropologist Donald Collier obtained from Lone Bull in 1939, Bluffing Bear was the son of Hole in the Head. Bluffing Bear is not a common name, so it's possible that Elbow's husband was Hole in the Head.
According to Lone Bull: Hole in the Head was one of an extensive family belonging to the Kuhinyan band, a sub-grouping within the larger Kiyuksa band of Oglalas (the people who settled round Kyle on Pine Ridge). His brother Big Brains or Big Head was an important headman in the 1850s. His uncle (as I reconstruct it) was Paints His Chin Red, the Oglala headman whose camp was wiped out by Pawnees in 1838. Paints His Chin Red's daughter (so likely a 'cousin' to Hole in the Head and siblings) was sacrificed to the Pawnee Morning Star deity.
Hole in the Head is listed as a member of Two Lance's band of Southern Oglala in Agent Saville's census of July 1874. Two Lance was the son of Hole in the Head's brother Flies Above (or Flies High) -- so Hole in the Head would have called Two Lance a 'son'. Hole in the Head is mentioned a few times in the Red Cloud Agency census register, 1876-77. He -- or possibly a younger man of the same name -- is listed in the 1890 census, as age 42 (born 1847-48), belonging to Man Above's Kiyaksa tiyospaye. Man Above was another relative of the Two Lance family. His wife is only 17 (in 1890) so can't be Elbow: it seems most likely this man is of a younger generation of the same family.

Mike S. states that Jessie Red Iron b. 1857 was(aka), Red Owl and went by the name of, Jennie One Feather after her marriage to Moses One Feather. Jessie/Jennie's son, William One Feather b.1880 was (aka), Owl Head and in his younger years and listed as such in the Census while, living with my G.G.G. Grandparents Charging Eagle and All Over. Now..., the name Owl Head makes a lot more sense to me, considering his Mother was (aka), Red Owl. Refer: Mike Stevens Website kakarns

Medicine Root District, ca 1886 Census (Meat Records): One Feather - 3 [with One Feather]: Charging Eagle - 3 Bear Wolf - 5 Spotted Elk - 3 Standing Cloud - 8 [Total= 22] Through much research, I am trying to confirm something about the Charging Eagle and the One Feather family connection. Unfortunately, I am rushed today but, wanted to share a few things this morning. To the best of my knowledge, the One Feather who was attacked by the cowboys/ranchers in Jan. of 1891, shortly after the Wounded Knee Massacre are my deceased relatives. One Feather was with Few Tails and his wife, Clown while hunting and witnessed the killing of Few Tails. This One Feather that I refer to is (aka), Moses One Feather and his wife was Jennie, (aka), Jessie Red Iron, (aka), Red Owl. If, anyone has more information or, would care to comment, it would be appreciated. "In Memory of my relatives, in this month of Jan. 2014, my heart is empty of happiness and full of sadness." kakarns Ref.: 1.) Census 1890, 1893, 1894 - LaDeane Miller 2.) "In The Shadow of Wounded Knee: The Untold Final Story of the Indian Wars" by Roger L. Di Silvestro 3.) Mike Stevens website 4.) Meat Records - Kansas City Archives I believe that I have better confirmation on this now. kakarns

Thank you very much Kingsley for, the recent information which, you have shared above. I do appreciate your help ! I did a few hours of research this a.m. on some of the names you have mentioned above.: a.) I have never heard of the men named; Hole in the Head and Paints His Chin Red and can't find any further information on them in my existing files. Interesting info. concerning these two men. b.) In a document and list of; Cut Off Sioux under Chief Little Wound from Feb. 16, 1877, pg. 84; it shows some of the following names; Charging Eagle, Two Lance, Two Lance Jr., White Dress and Flying Up. I am guessing that the Flies Above (aka), Flies High may also be, (aka), Flying Up. c.) Referring to other documents such as; Meat Records & Men Over the age of 21, etc., also shows some of the names you mentioned listed on the same pages with Charging Eagle. I noticed the name White Dress kept appearing. d.) Next, I referred to the "lakotalands" "Original Allotment", map website. Found several interesting things. For example; Flies Above received his allotment, 3 miles straight North of the Charging Eagle Allotment. Directly above Flies Above is the White Dress Allotment. e.) Still using the lakota lands map site, I then found the Shot-in-the-Eye (aka), White Mountain (?) Allotment which is, several miles East of Charging Eagle's and only approx. 5 1/2 miles from the Rosebud Reservation western border. What makes this more interesting is noticing the individuals who received their allotments near Shot-in-the-Eye.; Sophia Bluffing Bear (possibly, previously known as Sophia Rocky Bear ? Who married John Bluffing Bear ?), Richard Bluffing Bear, Lottie Bluffing Bear, Felix Bluffing Bear, Ada Bluffing Bear, Oliver Lone Bear, Henry Lone Bear, Susie Lone Bear, and Samuel Lone Bear. Dec. 18, 1925. Eagle Feather was the daughter of; Slow Dog and Old Arapahoe.

This is a partial of pg. 2 of; "DATA FOR HEIRSHIP FINDING AND FAMILY HISTORY" Document is dated; 09/07/62 The document was for my Great Grandmother, Maggie (Powell) Rousseau. The name listed for Maggie's Mother; "Fannie Big Turnip" has of course, created more questions. This is the only document to my knowledge, that refers to Maggie's Mother as; Fannie Big Turnip. There is more information about the name; "Big Turnip" on this site but, I am not sure of the connection at this time, if...there is one. kakarns

Long Joe Larrabee had 4 daughters as you mention but the daughter you name as Julia is not the 4th daughter. The 4th daughter is Elizabeth, she married Henry C. Lafferty. She was my grandmother.
