writwspretty-one thing you have to realize is the Lakota Sioux have sometimes 10 different names through their lifetime and even Crazy Horse had many-the only BIG NOSE family in South Dakota was Cheyenne who later went to Oklahoma-there are some in Rosebud Montana LaDeane Miller

My first question about Big Nose was not clear. I hope that the following information better explains who I am looking for.
I enjoy this website. There is a wealth of information here.
I am writing and illustrating a children's historical non-fiction book about a little girl named Susie and a Brulé Sioux woman who made a very special trade. This is a true story handed down by my husband's grandmother Susie Ekleberry, who was the daughter of Howard and Claribel Ekleberry. The Ekleberrys lived near the Rosebud Reservation in Gregory County, South Dakota, 4 miles northwest of Bonesteel. Howard and Claribel Ekleberry are buried in Rosebud Cemetery.
I am researching the Sioux couple with whom the Ekleberrys were friends. The family called them Mr. and Mrs. Big Nose. They also had another couple who were visitors in their home by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Yellow Breast. The Yellow Breasts would come with the Big Noses to visit the Ekleberrys according to Susie's story. I have found ample documentation of the Yellow Breasts. They show up on many Rosebud census records. Her name was Bad Woman. But, I have found very little documentation for the Big Noses.
Susie recorded that her father, Howard Ekleberry traded with Big Nose for fence posts, and she also recorded that the Big Noses were visitors at their home several times a year for a number of years. Those years would have been between 1892 and 1910, and perhaps until Big Nose died. The Ekleberrys lived in Gregory county from 1892 until their deaths in 1946.
The 1910 Federal Census recorded a Big Nose living in Ellston Precinct, Gregory County, South Dakota. It also records the following information: Mother and Father born in South Dakota, Big Nose was 82, Upper Brule, Widowed, Received allotment in 1890 but was not living on it, Did not speak English. Mrs. Big Nose then, had apparently died before 1910.
I also found a burial record for "Big Nose Mother" at the South Dakota Historical Society's webpage. She is buried at Mediator Cemetery near Wood, South Dakota. She died on January 26, 1906. She is buried in Section E, Lot 3, Grave 2. Another source listed the same burial and her approximate birthdate was listed as 1802. I am wondering if she was related to the Big Nose I am looking for. Perhaps she is his mother. I have contacted the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota they do not have any official records for this Big Nose. But I am pursuing some other avenues for finding out more about this woman.
I have a physical description of Mr. and Mrs. Big Nose from Susie Ekleberry Havens, and the stories about their visits.
I would like to find out Mrs. Big Nose's name, and any information about this Brule Sioux couple who were the contemporaries of the Yellow Breasts.

I wrote an inquiry concerning Big Nose to the Gregory County Register of Deeds. Although no documentation of a Big Nose family was available, they did send a photocopy from the book, "The Saga of Ponca Land" by Adeline S. Gnirk. It is a picture of A. A. Zorba and Big Nose. A.A. Zorba was a businessman in Herrick, South Dakota in the early 1900s. Herrick is north of Bonesteel, as was the homestead of the Ekleberry family. This is all in the same period of time that I am researching for my book about the Ekleberrys and the Big Noses. I am currently seeking a copy of the book "The Saga of Ponca Land" from our local library so I can read more. Does anyone recognize the people in this photograph? Attachments:

The man on right seems to be the same individual the NSHS collection has as "Big Nose" from Pine Ridge:

I have received the digital file of Big Nose from NSHS. I enlarged the name on the photo because the name in white appears to be written over another name. To me it appears to be Bull Do?. Was the photo initially identified with his other name? Did the photographer make a mistake? Any thoughts? Attachments:
