I´m anxious to know if there are more Indian portraits by George H. Nickerson from Provincetown, Massachusetts. There are two shots of Thunder Hawk and Belly Fat published by Nickerson, so I assume there must be some more. "Thunder Hawk/ Next Chief to Sitting Bull", Hunkpapa, c. 1875 Belly Fat (aka Walking Shooter), Hunkpapa, c. 1875

Aren't these by James Lucas? Look at the photo of Wolf Necklace and what seems to be the foot of a table leg at the lower left. It's on the picture of Belly Fat too. The studio backdrop for the Bellyfat lools the same as in Lucas' Four Bears and Son:

Ah, Grahame, thanks a lot. My fault. So Nickerson just copied and published them under his name. I´m gonna change the name of the thread to "James Lucas".
Any more information on him and his photographs?

These are the only Lucas photos I've come across. The Belly Fat one is superb. It's hard to tell, but he doesn't look as old as the Barry one (which I'm guessing is mid 80s) so they must be dated mid70s-early 80s - though Thunder Hawk has his hair cropped in the early 80s, doesn;t he?

The studio backdrop for the Bellyfat lools the same as in Lucas' Four Bears and Son: Hello Graham My family owns the photo that you posted as being Four Bears and Son. The back of the photo only says "Jas. H. Lucas. Photographer Standing Rock JL " and then my grandfather's signature saying "Property of JR Harmon". I had posted the photo to the Oyate Research discussion back in 2009, and asked if any one knew who the two Indians were. Dietmar and I had a HYPOTHESIS that it might possibly be Four Bear, but really there was no proof. Have you found proof? Did Four Bear have a son and if so, what was his name? Thanks for any help - I've been waiting for years for a positive identification of these two! Barbara

About the possible date of the stereographs: the auction site stated 1875.
Barbara, perhaps Grahame has found some proof, but I haven´t yet.
I do still see a resemblance to the portrait of Joseph Four Bears.

My Great-Great Grandfather was James H Lucas. I have a number of his daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintype photos, carte-de-vis... There are a number of unidentified American Indian's in some of the photos... If I post them in here can any of you assist in thier ID ? Attachments:

I think it's fair to say that we'd be really grateful if you could do that, James. We'd love to see them and make an attempt at identification.

Here are some photos taken by James H Lucas. I have already ID'd 2 of the Native Americans from pictures on your posting. Any idea on the others? If the resolution of the pictures is poor I can rescan the photos individually. - Scott

Thank you for the information...its very helpful to us. We are not sure about the dates he was on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. We think that the photo (previous posting) of the log building is the Photographers Hut on the reservation? Here are some more photos of the collection.

Scott,
welcome to the American-Tribes message boards. The pictures you posted so far are really awesome. Right now I´m studiing them closely and will let you know if I can find out some IDs.
It would also be great if you could share some biographical infos about your ancestor. Is it him in the picture with the children?
More later...
Best wishes
Dietmar
