I hope Ephriam can help out on this one. I found this image recently. It is said to be a photo by Daniel S. Mitchell. Is this correct? And who is the man in this portrait?

Dietmar:
This is not among the known Indian portraits by D. S. Mitchell, though that is not to say it is not by him. The image has a blanket hung up as a backdrop, similar to what is visible in some of Mitchell's portraits but he was not the only photographer to do this. I have seen this image before -- I will have to search through my files to see if it had any identification with it. What is the source for this image?

Ephriam, it´s from the Heritage Auction site: "Sioux Warrior in full Headdress by D.S. Mitchell".

The above "Sioux Warrior" picture is part of the P.T. Buckley stereoview collection at Heritage Auctions. There are about a dozen stereoviews which allegedly were taken by D.S. Mitchell, among them views of Red Coud Agency and Camp Robinson. Worth a look. www.ha.com/

I don't find anyone called Two Bears in either the Red Cloud Agency or Spotted Tail Agency censuses for 1877. Two Bears is the name of the other Lakota who, along with George Sword toured with Buffalo Bill in that year. There's a well known photo including that Two Bears, George Sword, and Cody. But he looks older than this Mitchell subject to my not very good eye.

Yes, W.R. Cross also took a portrait of the Hunkpapa Two Bears, but this man here looks different.
So I guess the caption must be wrong. However, I don´t think I´ve seen his face before.

I can't see how Mitchell could get the name wrong - - it's not like the Sioux Jim issue Ephriam brought up. So maybe it's another case of multiple names. At any rate -- Two Bears with Two Revolvers!

Dear Dietmar, this could be a 1877 James Hamilton photograph taken at Camp Robinson or Camp Sheridan. In his catalogue of Stereoscopic views of Northwest #89 Sioux Warrior or #151 Warrior, with War Bonnet.
