John, I found a new reference to what I think is the family. It's in the account given by Short Bull about his role in the Ghost Dance of 1890-91, which is printed in Wm S. E. Coleman, VOICES OF WOUNDED KNEE (Univ. Nebraska Press, 2000). The relevant quote from Short Bull is on p. 113.
Short Bull has recounted how he was working as a "freighter" at Rosebud in 1889-90, shipping goods on wagons from the railroad in Nebraska to the agency. In November 1890, he states, he received word from some other "Indian freighters who had just returned from Valentine . . . that soldiers were moving toward Rosebud Agency."
Moreover, one of the "freighters, Rescuer, son of Elk Road, told me that they were coming to arrest me and if I was not given up they would fire on us all."
My feeling is that this freighter was Stands For Them (the Lakota name is a metaphor for Protector or Rescuer), the son of Elk Robe, misheard by the writer as Elk Road.
The context is the arrival of troops at Rosebud on November 20, 1890, sent to 'restore order' during the Ghost Dance crisis. With tragic consequences, of course.
But this indicates that Stands For Them, like Short Bull, was working as a freighter on the agency payroll in 1890. Maybe there is documentation out there on that aspect of his life.

The plot thickens. Txs to Kingsley and Miller. It's becoming clear that 1890 was the seminal year for Stands For Them. His Eat No Dogs and Wazhazha connections may have pulled him towards traditionals/Ghost Dancers. His age (approx. 33) and baptism June 4, 1890 (Episcopalian) pulls the opposite way? Now this nugget today courtesy Mormon Church archives: Indian Wars Pension Card, Name of Soldier- James Stands For Them. Enlisted Indian Scouts U.S. Army 1890. Discharged 1890. Date of card filing 1923. (I can upload card as an image if any are interested.) This stint as a scout may actually feather in nicely with probability that SFT said to Short Bull he should give himself up "...or they will fire on all of us."
Miller, I was able to gleen good stuff from your data, but is there more info on the various pages? For instance, do I imply from the Sitting Bull Surrender census "pg. 99 Thunders Son" that Stands For Them's future wife Cora is connected with the Surrender list?? John Hafnor, Fort Collins, CO
