Hi, I've been devouring every book about Crazy Horse that comes into my hand, but I find some of his supposed exploits to be a little inaccurate like this:
"Prospector Charles Metz, with his wife, their maid Rachel Briggs, and three other men, was returning to Cheyenne. As they passed through Red Canyon, Crazy Horse picked off the party one by one. The maid fled up the canyon, but her body was found with a single arrow through the back. In the lone warfare style of a Thunder dreamer, Crazy Horse had emphatically declared that for him, the war had begun."
Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life - Page 201 by Kingsley M. Bray
I know it would perfectly fit in with Crazy Horse's nature, we know for sure that he liked to work alone and didn't brag of his exploits, but I seriously think there's no supporting evidence that it was Crazy Horse, alone, the author of this gory picture. Reading other accounts of the massacre I came across other aspects Mr. Bray forgot to mention :
In sum, there is more evidence about the Metz people massacre done by white and indian desperados, than by the idealistic and spiritual Crazy Horse , If somebody has more information about this sad event or why you think it was CH please, please comment.......Thanks.

Reading other accounts of the massacre I came across other aspects Mr. Bray forgot to mention :
- The bodies of Mrs. Metz and Rachel Briggs were found to be "outraged". As far as I know, Crazy Horse was something of a gentleman, he was a "Shirt Wearer" a man chosen to care for the poor and defenseless people in the village, those being women and children. I think it almost impossible that he could have physically harm the two women, much less kill them and impossible that he raped them.
- More substantial testimony came from Jesse Brown, another Hiller. He passed the scene of the slaughter just a few days later, and in looking over the site he discovered boot and shoe marks, as well as knee prints of cloth breeches, they could be plainly seen in the mud of the hiding spot behind pine bushes where attackers had waited to ambush the Metz party, indicating white men were involved in the attack. If a white man was involved in the attack, definetely Crazy Horse wasn't the indian helping him, Crazy Horse didn't even accept traders inside of his camp.
- Persimmon Bill, a notorious road agent known to hang out with Indian renegades and instigate depredations, was commonly believed to have been the leader in the Metz massacre. Bill, of course, was widely known, and friends of Metz asserted that he had slipped out of Custer about the same time they left.
In sum, there is more evidence about the Metz people massacre done by white and indian desperados, than by the idealistic and spiritual Crazy Horse , If somebody has more information about this sad event or why you think it was CH please, please comment.......Thanks.
