In the book "The Untold Indian Story of Custer's Last Stand - Little Bighorn Remembered" by Herman J. Viola there are pictures of Lakota veterans of the Little Bighorn battle. One of them is Flying By. Is this the son of Lame Deer? Any information on Lame Deer's son, Flying By would be appreciated.

Yes, Colleen, on page 62 is indeed the Mniconju Flying By (Kinyan Hiyaye, ca.1851-1930), also known as George Flying By, the younger son of Lame Deer. He participated in the Black Hills / Great Sioux war, including the Little Bighorn battle, fled to Canada with Sitting Bull and eventually settled on the Standing Rock reservation (ca. 1881). I recall seeing more pictures of him on this board with some more details on his life and family, but I was unable to find it in the Mniconju postings. Carlo

Flying By's involvement in the Little Big Horn fight is described in detail in the book Lakota Noon - The Indian Narrative of Custer's Defeat by Gregory F. Michno.
There is a photograph of Flying By (by David F. Barry) in the book Lakota and Cheyenne - Indian Views of the Great Sioux War, 1876-1877 by Jerome A. Greene. Also included in that book is an interview with Flying By about the Little Big Horn fight. Also in the same book is a description of the fight in May 7, 1877 where his father Lame Deer was killed.
Flying By was 1 of ca. 40 members of Crazy Horse's warrior society Hokší Hakákta (Hoksi Hakakta = Last Born Child Society).
Flying By is mentioned several times in the book Crazy Horse - A Lakota Life by Kingsley M. Bray. For example, Bray describes 2 adventurous raiding trips which Flying By took part in, along with Crazy Horse and others. The former trip described was in June 1875 and went as far as close to the Canadian borders. The latter trip described was in July 1876 after the Little Big Horn fight. Both stories are very interesting.
I read somewhere (don't remember where) that Flying By went from the agency to bury the body of his father several days or weeks after the Lame Deer fight on May 7, 1877.

Thank you to all who responded with information about Flying By. Would anyone know in what cemetery he would be buried?
