A website visitor would like to know about the “Contrary Indians".
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Dietmar,
It's a question that would require quite an extensive answer, as there are many tribes that have a "clown" or "contrary" cult.
For the powerful Heyoka dream cult among the Lakota, associated with the Thunder Beings, there is a lot of excellent written information available. I am not near my books right now, but some main ones from the top of my head are:
- Societies and Ceremonial Associations of the Oglala, by Wissler - Lakota Belief and Ritual, by Walker - Oglala Religion, by Powers - Heyoka: Lakota Rites of Reversal, by Wallis (?) - Sioux Indian Religion, by DeMallie - Sixth Grandfather/Black Elk, by DeMallie
Hope this helps,
Carlo

In his book "the fighting Cheyennes" George Bird Grinnell mentions contrary practices among the Cheyennes.

There is a very complete book on the subject by John Plant. I read it in German, "Heyoka, die contraries und Clowns der plainsindianer".

there are many possible interpretations. there is also a video made by the Crows that refers to themselves as the "Contrary Warriors". However, I don't think they are using the word "contrary" to mean the same thing that the Lakotas do when they talk about their Heyoka tradition. I will be honest and say that I have not seen that video from the Crow Nation. I just know that it exists.

The Heyoka society is a group of men who dream of the thunder, there are ceremonies and test that one goes though in the Heyoka society
